We’re all pretty familiar with how FromSoftware has captivated gamers around the globe with their titles, which have mainly grabbed attention and praise for their combat systems and how difficult they can prove to be. Although the studio has been revered for its intricate narratives and game mechanics, it has boldly crafted some of the most unforgettable dark and post-apocalyptic environments.

AfterElden Ring, FromSoftware’s next game in the Souslike genre currently remains known. Whatever the developers’ next Souls game after Elden Ring ends being, be it a new IP or a sequel, fans have been long hoping for a drastic change in the atmosphere of these games. Many gamers feel like FromSoftware should opt for something new that gives us a more lively, bright setting. However, Hidetaka Miyazaki has squashed all these talks by confirming that FromSoftware will never make such titles.
Hidetaka Miyazaki Explains Why FromSoftware Prefers Dark-Themed Games
In recent decades, we’ve seen FromSoftware releasing ground-breaking intellectual properties such asDark Souls,Bloodborne,Seikro: Shadows Die Twice, and finally,Elden Ring. These games have undoubtedly defined an entire generation of gamers. While these titles might differ in their mechanics and nature, what they all have in common is dark or post-apocalyptic themes.
FromSoftware’s perfection with the brand of dark, doomy, and mystery-laden games has worked out quite well for them so far. However, many in the community hold the opinion that it’s time for a change, and FromSoftware should showcase their creativity in a brighter and more lively setting. Unfortunately, it seems like this desired switch of game environments might never happen.

In an interview with IGN, Miyazaki touched upon the various aspects of Armored Core 6’s development and gave us an in-depth explanation behind some choices. When asked why FromSoftware has a fascination for apocalyptic settings, here’s what Miyazaki had to say:
I think the second reason would be, this is kind of a technical reason, but I’d say that a lively bright setting is a little bit beyond FromSoftware’s capability or experiences as a developer. So it’s easier for us to direct and apply our own resources on what we’re good at, and what we’re used to. And so it is easier for us to express ourselves within these kind of darker and drier and quieter apocalyptic settings than livelier and busy ones.

According to Miyazaki, a game with a lively, bright setting isn’t what FromSoftware wants to do. It’s much easier for the developers to use their past experience for something with which they’ve been familiar for decades. There’s no point in FromSoftware making a sudden switch to uncharted territories and giving us anabomination likeSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. FromSoftware serves as a guiding light for what post-apocalyptic games can be at its very best.
Why Do Gamers Love FromSoftware Titles?
Although FromSoftware has been developing games since 1998, their true popularity began to rise when they decided to rescue the originalDemon’s Soulsfrom the abyss of development hell. After this, they crafted the firstDark Soulsgame, which took the industry by storm.

This company has managed to bring such novel games with loveable qualities that fans simply can never get enough of. The lore of most of the FromSoftware games is quite fantastic. The decision to not spoon-feed everything and opt for a less direct approach when it comes to the overall narrative makes for quality time.
It’s not only the lore element; FromSoftware always excels in the gameplay aspect as well. They always put in extra effort for designing their worlds and bring players challenges that truly test their skills. They’ve always been able to perfectly balance most of their games, and even when they don’t, they manage to keep fans playing them for years. It’s this trait that’s responsible for millions of fans, massive funding, and remakes of their most popular games.
