Tron: Legacywas a great film for several reasons. Piggybacking off the success and impact of 1982’sTron,the film came as a surprising sequel to the classic film and ended up gaining even more popularity than its predecessor. While another part starring Jared Leto is set to release soon, many cannot help but wonder what took the sequel so long to develop.

With the second film having been released almost 14 years ago, fans almost lost hope and wondered what caused such a great delay. The director of the 2010 film, Joseph Kosinski, gave an interview where he talked about why another film did not happen immediately after, and his reasoning was quite interesting.

Why Did Jared Leto’sTron: LegacyNot Get A Sequel?

When it comes to movies and sequels, there are several reasons why they can or can’t happen. From underwhelming performances to issues with cast and scheduling, there are many factors that contribute to a movie not getting to tell more of its story. During an interview with theVulture, Joseph Kosinski spoke on whyTron: Legacydid not get a sequel sooner.

Rather than putting the blame on the audience or the cast and production, the director spoke on how Disney, the studio behind the movie, was to blame for it not getting another part. He started by revealing that he tried very tediously to get another movie approved by the studio. However, when he made the 2010 film, he mentioned that the studio was very different.

Still from Tron: Legacy

I got so close. I really tried. I got close in 2015, and Disney pulled the plug on it. […]  But it was a different Disney by 2015.

“He did a good job given the circumstances”: Jared Leto’s ‘Morbius’ Director Receives an Outpouring of Support From Fans After Blaming Himself for the Doomed Film

At that time, Disney did not have theStar Warsfranchise or the Marvel Cinematic Universe under their belt. Their absence made it easier for them to focus on smaller productions and ideas centered around creativity rather than profits.

When I made ‘Tron: Legacy,’ they didn’t own Marvel; they didn’t own ‘Star Wars.’ We were the play for fantasy and science fiction.

This made getting a sequel for a 30-year-old film very easy when Kosinski tried in 2010. However, things changed drastically when it came time to try again in 2015.

The Bright Lights of the MCU andStar WarsBlinded Disney

Joseph Kosinskirevealed that when he was trying to getTron 3approved by Disney, they were thinking of every single detail on a much bigger scale. Managing a billion-dollar franchise is no easy feat, and headlining two could only be more challenging. While audiences could not be happier about the additions, it made smaller-scale films get lost in the bright lights ofStar Warsand the MCU.

Kosinski mentioned that because of just how much Disney had on their plate and how much was at stake, they were less willing to take risks. They wanted to stick to what they knew would work and did not want to waste any resources on the unknown, according to the director.

Tron 3 cancelled

And once you’ve got those other things under your umbrella, it makes sense that you’re going to put your money into a known property and not the weird art student with black fingernails in the corner — that was ‘Tron.’ And that’s okay.

While the tale was certainly tragic, Kosinski did not seem spiteful about what happened. It would seem that the director understood where the studio was coming from and, disheartened, mentioned that he would have taken a similar decision if he were in their shoes.

While this piece of information is quite unfortunate, fans did eventually get another chapter from the story of Tron, with the upcomingTron: Ares, starringJared Leto, set to release on 02 June 2025.
