While the MCU may now be satisfying the hunger of comic book fans with every major superhero and supervillain making an appearance in the MCU, there’s a certain charm to the films in Sam Raimi’s original Spider-Man trilogy which makes them unforgettable.

Even after the untimely conclusion of the original series more than a decade and a half ago, fans still fondly remember the iconic moments that those films left for the industry.

Although the trilogy is revered as one of the best, the last film is pretty controversial since it led to the downfall of the franchise. And now, according to one of the stars from the originals, the next installment was aiming to do the same thing by introducing multiple new villains like The Lizard and The Vulture all at once, which had proven fatal for it before.

Sam Raimi’sSpider-Man 4Was On The Road To Commit The Same Mistakes As The Previous Film

The fans and general film-goers will agree that some of the old superhero films struck the perfect balance between comic book movies and wider cinema, among whichSam Raimi‘s Spider-Man trilogy is considered an amazing example.

But the third film is what doomed the franchise simply because it went too hard on proving itself to be a superhero movie by introducing various iconic villains inSpider-Man 3,overwhelming the fans and taking away from that sense of groundedness.

In a recent interview withComicBook, Dylan Baker, the star who played the role of Curt Connors in the trilogy featuringTobery Maguireas the titular superhero, revealed that the proposedSpider-Man 4was going to repeat the same mistake as the previous one. He said that Connors was going to turn into The Lizard in the future, which, according to Raimi, was going to happen in the fourth film.

This would’ve proven just as deadly if the third one had barely survived since the director would’ve yet again overwhelmed the audience with a plethora of major villains all vying for screen time and storytelling on screen, making a mess in the movie. He said:

“It was just letting the Lizard come out and see the world and it just killed me. I would have loved to have done that. Luckily, Rhys Ifans was fantastic and I got to go, ‘Very well done,’ while wishing I could have done it.”

Although it was still sad to see such a beloved franchise take a nosedive into non-existence, there was an understandable yet tragic reason behind its downfall.

Is There aSpider-Man 4In The Works

After the end of the original franchise in 2007 with the third film, we saw Maguire don the mask and suit once more in 2021’sSpider-Man: No Way Homealongside Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield, which reinvigorated the interest of the fans in the originalSpider-Man 4that Raimi planned.

“I haven’t talked to Tobey”: Sam Raimi Finally Addresses Spider-Man 4 Rumors Started by Sandman Actor Thomas Haden Church

In the recent past, there were rumors of the film being considered by Sony to be introduced into their SpiderVerse franchise, fueled by none other than Sandman actor Thomas Haden Church. But so far, there have been no positive updates from either Raimi or Maguire about the fourth film being anywhere in sight, much less from Sony.

But it’s not as if they are downright declining the possibility of it either, which gives the fans hope for the movie being made somewhere down the line.
