But while the show was incredibly popular, just like the rest, it wasn’t immune to certain generalizations. Something that actress Courteney Cox, who played Monica on the sitcom, had been quite vocal about.

In a past interview, the actress expressed her criticism of the Generation X label and added how this tag had not only misrepresented the entire cast but also categorized them as aimless.

While it was then, today, almost three decades after its premiere, the sitcom is mostly discussed from the camera lens ofmillennials, or Gen Z, rather than that of Generation X.

Interestingly, the term Generation X was coined in the early 1990s from Douglas Coupland’s novelGeneration X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. People then started using it to label all the “slacker” 20-something individuals.

Not only Cox, but other cast members of the sitcom also voiced their displeasure with the tag. As reported by the same Vulture article, Matt LeBlanc saw the label as having negative stereotypes such as having a lack of direction and laziness. Further, for Jennifer Aniston, it was very insulting and completely disconnected from the sitcom’s true essence.

Matthew Perry added that avoiding the label was something that all of them constantly did as it made them uncomfortable with what it suggested.
