The ending ofJujutsu Kaisenis turning out to be one of the most controversial endings in Shonen manga. The trend began withNarutoandBleach, thenAttack on Titanand nowJujutsu Kaisenis carrying the torch… but for all the wrong reasons!

Sukuna holding his Trishul in Jujutsu Kaisen

Nobara coming back out of nowhere, the monstrous Sukuna dying pathetically like Muzan and Hakari vs. Uraume was off-screened. Seems as though the author just wanted to get things over with.

As the manga is set to end in 3 chapters, fans have a lot of questions aboutJujutsu KaisenGege left unanswered. One of them is about the purpose behind the trident Sukuna holds on the cover of chapter 117.

Theories surrounding the cultural significance of Sukuna’s trident

Gege Akutamihas not expanded or explained them ye butone fan theory on Redditsuggests the author got their inspiration from Hindu or Vedic scriptures. More specifically speaking, Sukuna’s weapons are inspired by the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva.

In his right hand is a weapon called a trishul or a trident, a weapon that Lord Shiva is said to wield. One story says that Shiva’s wife was dissatisfied due to the Sun’s unbearable heat. To cull the heat by 1/8th, the Sun underwent some grinding, and some of its hot matter fell on the Earth, which was then used to create the Trident.

Now, what’s interesting is that in some myths, the Trishul was created from heat or fire, and one of the prongs represents fire. InJujutsu Kaisen, fans have seen Sukuna use fire-like powers that seem to outclass Jogo’s flames, who we know are capable of instantly incinerating humans in a few seconds. The same goes for Sukuna’s arrow.

There’s another legend about Shiva that concerns an attack called Pashupatastra. In this story, Shiva had to destroy three evil demon cities floating in the sky called Tripura.

For this purpose, he made the Pashupatastra by combining several components of different Gods and Goddesses and even the universe itself. Everything that was involved in the attack—the chariot, the charioteer, the bowstring, the wheels—were made of divine components.

But the main focus is that when Lord Shiva launched the Pashupatastra attack on Tripura, it took on the form of a fire arrow. The arrow itself was made from the essence of another Hindu deity, Vishnu, who is known as the Lord of the Lords.

This arrow burned down the three cities to ashes, akin to the modern-day nuke. And this arrow is probably similar to Sukuna’s arrow he used to burn down Jogo. But alas, fans may never know the real meaning of the Sukuna’s weapons.

Gege may never confirm these theories about Sukuna

Sukuna was a real menace to society. Many fans would recall how scary he was during the Shibuya arc, destroying everything, including Jogo. And when Yuji came back, he saw the wreckage that he caused through Sukuna’s will, causing him to wail in frustration.

Known as the King of Curses, Sukuna deserved better. Fans were anticipating a big Heian-era backstory or anything significant from Sukuna’s life. But all that happened in the end was that the dude whined like a baby before reducing into ashes.

This would probably give rise to lots of fan fiction and fan novels. Unless Gege is willing to do spin-offs, perhaps this is the only way fans can ever be satisfied withJujutsu Kaisen and its story.

Jujutsu Kaisenis now available to watch on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
