Though his portrayal of Detective Robert Goren was nothing short of outstanding and became a fan favorite within little to no time, it didn’t come without troubles of its own as his role mentally affected him tremendously. But while those struggles were one thing, D’Onofrio balanced those out by listing a silver lining to everything he had to endure on-set as well.

Starring as one of the lead protagonists ofLaw & Order: Criminal Intent, playing Detective Robert Goren hadVincent D’Onofriosolving the most baffling cases while studying the psychological aspects of crime and criminals with his team. This, in turn, required him to dedicate many long hours of his day to the sets of the police procedural drama television series.

Talking to Michael Rosenbaum on hisInside of Youpodcast, he candidly confessed his feelings about the same, saying: “I just couldn’t believe that we were working so much. I just couldn’t believe that it was okay to do it year after year. And I learned the hard way that it was okay, that that’s the way the business was. And it’s not like that anymore.”

He explained how an article from the New York Times listed him and his co-star Kathryn Erbe (Alexandra Eames) in the main part as “we were, at the time, averaging 16, 17 hours a day.” He then went on to compare it to the situation today, saying, “Today these days, it’s like f****** vacation. In network TV, you make a lot more money, but in the end, it’s not worth it.”

Of course, long working hours meant it all took a toll on his mental health as well. D’Onofrio, for one, found himself getting brutally affected by all that work strain ashe continued to expressduring the podcast:

You get nasty. I got to a point where I was completely in my head and just had no patience for anything. The only people that I would give back to would be the other actors and the camera crew. Everybody else, to me, was just in my way and taking up my time from getting home and going to sleep.

Needless to say, working on such serious drama pieces asCriminal Intentfor such long hours had the actors stuck in their own minds. But even with all the hard work it took from him, D’Onofrio is still as grateful for the series as ever.

Continuing to talk about the series, theDaredevilactor then balanced his review on it all by pointing out the silver lining of this cloud: Working onCriminal Intentfor ten years, 10 seasons, and around 195 episodes had D’Onofrio learning a lot, especially the art of transition, asit’s a very different matterfor television shows than it is for films.

The 65-year-old said, “I have to say, having said all that, when I left that show, I was ten times a better actor than before I went on it. My chops got so good. I learned how to transition so much easier.” He then explained that films required him to do emotional transitions over a few scenes or an act, but “on television, you do transitions within a scene. Big ones.”

Not just me. And you leave a situation like that like you’re great at the technical aspect of your job.
