We all once wondered if the Avengers could thrive without the iconic leaders, butWhat If…?Season 3 flipped that question on its head. Anthony Mackie’s Captain America redefined what it means to carry the shield. While Chris Evans and Robert Downey Jr. left unforgettable legacies, Mackie brought fresh energy, depth, and grit to the forefront.

That alone cements him as the perfect candidate to lead Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.

#WhatIf[SPOILERS]No matter the timeline, one thing about Sam Wilson is that he ALWAYS follows and leads with his heart, even if it ends up costing his life. For that quality alone, he will forever have my respect. He’s the PERFECT candidate to lead the Avengers.pic.twitter.com/4N4MqC4Pqt

This season ofWhat If…?delivered dazzling animation that leaned into the limitless potential of the medium. From Celestials battling tomecha-Avengers taking on giant Hulks, the show embraced scenes too bold (or too wild) for live-action.

But it wasn’t just about spectacle. Smaller, grounded sequences, like tightly choreographed fight scenes and dynamic car chases, were just as fun.

The voice acting (while occasionally uneven) featured a strong return from several MCU stars. Kat Dennings and David Harbour brought extra energy to their roles, while others, including Mackie and Oscar Isaac, sometimes struggled to match the demands of animation.

Still, his Sam Wilson shone where it mattered: in heart, grit, and unshakeable values.

Season 3 alsosidestepped the narrower focus of its predecessor. Where Season 2 zeroed in on Captain Carter, this time the narrative spread across heartfelt tales about love, friendship, and kindness. Sure, it flirted with a Sesame Street vibe, but it worked. Mackie’s Captain America embodied these values, solidifying why he’s the Avengers’ beating heart.

He’s definitely gonna be doing this with Ross when he hulks out. Sam may not be buddies with him but he’s human. He cares. Seeing someone trapped in a monster they can’t control would break anyone but he can’t stand back. He has to be the guy Steve wanted to lead the way.

It’s Sam Wilson’s heart and leadership that have fans hooked. Fans are all in on him, knowing he’s the worthy successor to the shield and the Avengers’ new heart.

What If…?Season 3 is available to watch on Disney + and Hulu.
