Christian Bale is not a big fan of acting in sequels or franchises or ensembles. He revealed that he wanted to be part of very varied movies, playing a variety of roles. Bale has acted only in three sequel or franchise roles in his career. He had openly expressed his issues with starring in the 2000 sequel ofShaft. His experience inTerminator SalvationandThor: Love and Thunderwas no better, with both films failing to impress the masses.

He revealed that he liked to star in films that were“rollercoasters”, the usual big-budget kind of films, as well as the more artistic films. He shared in an interview withTotal Film:
I love making very varied movies. Sometimes I want to be in a rollercoaster of a movie with lots of screaming and shouting and a feeling of unity with the people you’re watching the movie with. And other times, I want to do movies where it’s very much like sitting reading a book by yourself or listening to a real personal piece of music.

He shared that he didn’t want to act in the same kind of movies all the time, clearly indicating the lack of major sequel roles in his career. He shared that the varied roles helped him work with very different personalities. He wanted to take the risk and challenge with people excited about movie-making. Bale shared:
I would get very bored if I did the same kind of movies all the time. They just give me variety so I don’t feel like I’m stuck in a rut of banging out the same thing all the time and I get to work with very different personalities and people who are driven by very different excitements about movie-making and I like taking that risk and challenge.

His issues with repeating roles surprisinglydid not stop him from doing three filmsforChristopher Nolan. He played Batman in theDark Knighttrilogy, a much more successful role in the superhero genre thanThor: Love and Thunder.

It is an important role for me. Rather than being just a part in a film, essentially BEING the film meant an awful lot to me. I’m really enjoying that. Frankly, I found it a little bit frustrating doing ‘Shaft’ because I’m back to being one part in a very big film.
