AsThe Brutalistprepares to take over the Oscars, the film has landed in some controversy thanks to its editor Dávid Jancsó’s recent comments. Therefore, some fans were understandably upset and expressed their wish for Brody to be disqualified from the Oscars race on social media.

Directed by Brady Corbet,The BrutaliststarsAdrien Brodyas László Tóth, a Hungarian-Jewish architect and Holocaust survivor. The film received critical acclaim with Brodywinning a Golden Globe for his performance. However, editor Dávid Jancsó revealed in an interview with Red Shark News that the film used Artificial Intelligence to modify parts of Brody’s performance.

I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce.

Jancsó made the above statement (viaThe Wrap), revealing that the film filled in some language gaps in Brody and Felicity Jones’ performance using AI. The editor’s comments referred to a two-minute segment in the film where a letter written by Brody’s character to his wife is read aloud in full Hungarian.

Jancsó admitted that while the creative team attempted to fix the scene using ADR from the main actors some elements proved too hard to speak with authenticity. After an attempt to ADR the lines with other actors failed, the creative team looked for other solutions, resulting in the use of AI. As a result, it is safe to say that a small portion of Brody’s performance, especially his Hungarian dialogue was modified with AI.

Following the editor’s revelation aboutThe Brutalist‘s use of AI, the news quickly spread on social media. User @GuadagninoFilms created a lengthy thread on the social media platform X, highlighting Jancsó’s comments and the film’s use of AI, which you can check outhere.

If Adrien Brody wins with his AI ENHANCED Hungarian accent I will kill myself in front of the Academy.

The user wrote the above on X, urging for Brody’s performance to be ignored from the Best Actor raceat the upcoming Academy Awards. Similarly, other netizens also reacted negatively to the film’s use of AI, and here is what they had to say.

I feel like it was unnecessary to use AI to get a “perfect” Hungarian accent. It’s not a documentary, it’s a movie. If their accents were good, then it’s fine. It’s like when Brits get annoying with how perfect an accent is depending on the area of the neighborhood.

Their performances shouldn’t be eligible for awards because of this

Barf. This is gross🤢

Martin Scorsese Won’t Like ‘The Brutalist’ Giving in to a Very Real Public Demand at the ‘Expense of Art’

That’s quite controversial. Use of ai is so unregulated. If ai can be ok to enhance voice, I wonder if it’s also ok to enhance physical appearance, would that be cheating too? It’s confusing

i genuinely have no words how is this even acceptable

As the tweets suggest, many netizens were completely against the idea of Brody’s performance being considered for Best Actor following the revelation of the film’s reliance on AI to modify his performance. Despite the overwhelmingly negative reactions to the film’s controversial use of AI, it is unlikely to be disqualified from the Oscars race.

The editor’s comments largely hint that AI’s use in the movie was minimal and some fans argued that it does not negate Brody’s otherwise brilliant performance. Ultimately, the debate regarding AI in films will only heat up after this controversy and it would take a perfect world for Brody to be disqualified from the Oscars.

The Brutalistis currently playing in theaters.
