TheMaster Chief Collectionhad a pretty rocky launch, but this collection does offer some little touches to try and be the best thatHaloever was. My new personal favorite is a Skull by the name of Acrophobia. Skulls are gameplay modifiers, and Acrophobia allows Master Chief to fly wherever the camera is aiming.

I attempted a little self-imposed challenge. Using only the Acrophobia Skull to get around, I couldn’t step on dirt or grass, but man-made structures and rocks were okay. I played on Normal and used another Skull called Bandanna to have unlimited ammo. Too many of the discarded weapons would be in the dirt, so I just added “no weapon or ammo pick-ups” to the rules. Take your bets now on how long I lasted.

Why be a superhero if you can’t be invincible?

The Pinball Of Autumn

When I started the first level, where the unskippable tutorial always is, the graphics defaulted to Anniversary. I know a lot of people prefer the Classic version of Halo: Combat Evolved, so I switched during the cutscene, so my captures would be in Classic. This switch resulted in the game crashing. You’re welcome.

I’m mentioning all of this because it was the most interesting part when it came to level one. The Pillar Of Autumn is a UNSC spaceship and thereforenotthe ground, and it unfortunately shows why you couldn’t ax this rule if you wanted to try this challenge. The corridors were so narrow that when I tried to fly around, I gently bumped up against them and could barely move forward.

Halo Master Chief Collection Tutorial Marine Classic Graphics

Instead of defying gravity and putting the fear into the Covenant army, it instead felt like when a bat flies into someone’s home and just keeps crashing into the rafters. Instead of a tough or fun challenge, it was a normal Bandanna Skull playthrough that took longer than usual because I couldn’t see where I was going.

I was going to need to be an open sky to really try out this challenge, which is exactly what level two offers.

Crash Landing On Halo Again And Again

Nowthisis what it’s all about! Taking to the skies without even needing a spaceship, engaging in a dogfight with a Covenant drop-ship as Cortana whines that it’s too dangerous and you have to get out of there. This is why we break games — to do outlandish things that don’t ultimately matter. That drop-ship is invincible, unlike Chief (or myself), but it still felt so good to look it in the eye as I opened fire. I even stood on it for a bit. Very awkwardly.

But the challenging aspects of the challenge came back. For one, my escape pod’s door pointed directly at the dirt, and I have no clue if I angled it well enough to completely avoid it. The next part is something I’ve been sitting on for a while. See, there’s a massive drawback to the Acrophobia Skull:343coded in velocity damage.

Halo Master Chief Collection Shooting At Covenant Dropship Using Acrophobia Skull

So Chief went from a bat stuck in a belfry to a fly hitting a speeding car. As the clip shows, I was eventually able to fly past the Covenant army (and abandon my marine allies, but hey, they got Johnson with them. They’re fine).

But, once I finally made it to my destination, I did so by grinding the soles off of Chief’s feet. Remember how I can’t pick up guns because they’re on the ground? I picked one of the few Halo games that use the stupid medkit system, and just like dropped guns, a lot of medkits are foundin the dirt. So I had to start playing sneaky, as I had the health of an ant, wings or no wings.

Halo Master Chief Collection Sniping With Pistol On Giant Rock

I came to appreciate the terrain of the area because of this. By flying up to these high rocks, I could snipe the Elites and Grunts with my pistol until Foehammer finally arrived. The waves took forever, but hey, the Marines survived! In fact, of the three groups of marines I was supposed to save, I managed to get two out of three. Well, two of four if you count the ones I abandoned, but I don’t.

This was also the first time I didn’t get lost in this level, which I always do when using the Warthog. Being able to fly over the cliffs meant I could see the map much better.

Especially here, where I flew too high up and broke the game. The Acrophobia Skull loves to make MCC poop the bed, by the by. Often, you’re able to fly so fast that you break the script and the game can’t figure out what to do.

ButIknew what to do, and that was to fail to save the last set of marines, and then fly directly into the back of Foehammer’s ship. All while kind of sort of not touching the ground. So yeah, whoever bet I didn’t get further than level three was correct. Hope you’re happy.
