Some of the most powerful Shonen anime protagonists are voiced by female voice actresses. You might be thinking that it couldn’t be YOUR favorite character, but you’d be wrong. If you are a fan ofNaruto, Dragon Ball, Pokemon, One Piece, or any other such series, congratulations, the hero you love is voiced by a woman.

In an interview with the New York Times, the voice actresses of some of the most popular Shonen heroes gathered to deliver their views of the characters as well as address how surprised fans are when they realize the truth behind these characters.
Naruto’s Voice Actress Reveals the Reaction of Shocked Fans
Inthe interview, three prominent voice actresses appeared to share tidbits about their jobs.Maile Flanagan voices Naruto, Amanda Miller voices Boruto andColleen Clinkenbeard is the voice actress for Luffy. All of the actresses serve as the voices of protagonists in the English dub version of these anime.

Clinkenbeard expressed that fans are always surprised by them as they do not expect women to voice actresses behind such popular and strong male characters. However, this trend has been going on for so long that even the actresses themselves are taken aback by how fans have no idea about it. Clinkenbeard expressed that fans often take her autographs for conventions for one character and are too late to realize that she also voices Luffy, resulting in a shocked interaction.
Maile Flanagan, the voice of Naruto, expresses it the best:
Usually, one guy drags his bros up to me and says, ‘I told you she was a chick.’
All three voice actresses are pros at their work and have practiced their crafts for decades. Thus, it is natural that fans have not been able to figure out the difference. It is these actresses who embody the characters they play, and they don’t forget to have fun while doing it.

Maile Flanagan is the voice actress ofNarutofor the English dubbed version of the anime. But the original Japanese cast for the character is also female. Naruto is voiced by Junko Takeuchi in the Japanese version. If you are aPokemonfan, you are bound to have realized at some point thatAsh Ketchum is actually voiced by Veronica Taylorin the English dubbed version and Rika Matsumoto in the original Japanese anime.

The child version of Goku was voiced by Stephanie Nadolny in the English dub series before it was changed to Sean Schemmel as the character hit puberty.
Gon, the protagonist ofHunter x Hunter,is also voiced by Megumi Han, who brought the character to life. He is voiced by Erica Mendez in English. Edward Elric, the fiery hero of theFullmetal Alchemistfranchise, was voiced by Romi Park, who did an incredible job. Last but not least, Luffy is voiced by Mayumi Tanaka in the Japanese version, while Colleen Clinkenbeard took up the mantle in English.
