Fans have long been demanding a sequel to Nicolas Cage’sFace/Off, and while there was indeed a plan for it, somehow it never gets off the ground. Director Adam Wingard, who famously helmed twoGodzillafilms, even admitted he met with the actor.

Even after all the campaign efforts to get a follow-up to the 1997 action thriller movie, Wingard focused on making a sequel to 2021’sGodzilla vs. Kong, but fans cannot blame him. Cage also loved the franchise that they ended up talking about it rather thanFace/Off.
Adam Wingard Spoke With Nicolas Cage AboutGodzillaMovies
In an interview withUproxx, filmmakerAdam Wingardrevealed he discussed the plans for a sequel toNicolas Cage’sFace/Off, but during their conversation, they could not help but insert someGodzillatopics.
I specifically had a meeting with Nic Cage about Face/Off 2. And one of the things we specifically talked about a lot is Hedorah because that’s also his favorite Godzilla movie. And probably for all the same reasons that I love it.

As expected, the talk ended up focusing on the kaiju franchise and how they both love the 1971 movieGodzilla vs. Hedorah. Wingard went on to rave about it: “It’s almost borderline experimental sometimes. I mean, there’s a sequence with 50 split screens going on at once. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie do that outside of that film.”

The director no longer addressed the sequel toFace/Offin the interview and continued to speak aboutGodzilla, which perhaps also happened when he was talking with the Oscar-winning actor. “That’s the thing about Godzilla is that he has been overtly a metaphor. He’s been good, he’s been bad.”
Nevertheless, Wingard assured fans that if ever he revisits theFace/Offfranchise, he would certainly make a sequel and not a reboot.

Will There Be A Sequel ToFace/Off?
Speaking onThe Fourth Wall PodcastviaThe Playlist, Wingard revealed the condition he would like before getting started on theFace/Offsequel.
Look, I mean, like, the only way that we’re going to do this really is if we get, you know, the original cast.’ I’m not going to say how it works or anything, but like, it’s got to be 100% the real follow-up not just like some fan service movie, not just some like ca-ching thing.

Indeed, fans would be delighted to know that the director cares so much about the integrity of the film enough to only want the entire cast back again. “This has to feel like the ultimate follow-up to the original film,” he reiterated.
The buzz on theFace/Offsequel started in 2019 after screenwriter Oren Uziel was reported to pen the script and Wingard to take the director’s seat. The delay is due to several reasons, with the most obvious being Cage’s unsure return given the first movie’s ending.

The other reasons are the writers and actors strike, and Wingard’s busy schedule after working on the recentGodzilla x Kongmovie.
Face/Offis available to stream via Prime Video.
