Goku, the iconic character of Akira Toriyama isn’t the “Good Guy” as he seems most of the time. Goku is known for his fighting spirit, unending energy, and appetite for battle. A closer look at his actions can question his noble side. The sentiment that he may not be a virtuous hero has gained traction among the fans, sparking discussions about his true nature and motives.

It has even led some fans to argue that Goku is indeed the true villain. What is shown, precisely, in the Zeno Expo, is the result of Goku choosing that his obsession with fighting the strongest outweighed the cost of millions upon millions of lives.

Goku’s actions, heroic or self-serving?

The central issue arose from the battle with Bergamo. Grand Zeno, the supreme ruler across all universes, decided to hold a multiverse tournament where the losing universes would be erased from existence. Bergamo of Universe 9 foresaw his chance to save his universe and the others.

Bergamo requested the Zeno to nullify the decision of Zeno if he could defeat Goku. Zeno agreed but had a counter-stipulation as well. He said that if Goku won the other universes would be erased.

Knowing the stakes of the Tournament of Power and the potential destruction of entire universes, he chose to engage in a fierce fight. Rather than saving the other universes, Goku thought the combat would be the right decision for him. He went with all his force against Bergamo. He could’ve thrown the fight but he didn’t and ultimately destroying Bergamo he disregarded the future of the other universes.

This decision broke his idea of being a selfless character. His actions contrasted with how fans used to see him. And it made them realize that Goku isn’t a savior of innocents always.

If he had any intention to save the others he wouldn’t fight this one. He could’ve understood the gravity of the situation and refused to go any further to Bergamo. But he ended up doing what satisfied his fighting spirit. Probably he never really cared for saving others, allhe was there to prove was that he was the strongest of them all.

The duality of Goku’s character, a deeper look

Gokus’s behavior has often jeopardized those who truly relied on him.He was the one who reminded Grand Zeno about the battle indirectly. This battle from the Tournament of Power is just a concrete testament to his true motives. All he had to do was leave the battle and think about others who considered him a savior.

These comments prove that fans are pissed off at him, refusing to believe that he’s a good character. Goku proved that he is a true Saiyan, always hungry for battle more than anything. This uncovers a layer of his character masked underthat innocent face. This goes against his good-guy image, also, it proves that he isn’t.

It served as a point of proof for debating points on Goku’s character. Not long after, fans started arguing whether Goku was more a hero or a villain when he decided to defeat Bergamo, which led to the destruction of the losing universes. However, they were saved by the Android 17 as he won the Tournament of Power by being the last man standing. He used the Super Dragon Balls to revive all the erased universe andultimately pass the test of virtue.
