The controversy around Elon Musk’s legitimacy continues. It’s not about electric vehicles or space travel though. This time, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX has finally responded to accusations of account boosting and outsourcing gameplay inPath of Exile 2andDiablo 4.

The billionaire recently responded with his trademark humor, claiming that he had a Chinese alter-ego playing for him. Sure his response is funny, but what is Musk getting from pretending to be good? There’s already evidence of his mediocre skill so what’s the point?
Elon Musk is really baiting people online with this
On January 15, Musk addressed the allegations during aPoE2broadcast from Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club. When asked about a “Chinese driver” playing on his account, Musk quipped, “Yes, his name is Yilongma, and he’s amazing. I rely on him for everything.” He later reiterated his joke on X, saying, “I love my Chinese alter-ego.”

The whole situation began earlier this month when Musk streamed himself playingPath of Exile 2, showcasing high-level content with his hardcore-mode character, Percy_Verence. The early access forPoE2has only been out for about a month and the game itself is extremely challenging. Especially in hardcore mode, where a single death deletes the character permanently.
Path of Exile 2’s Co-op Experience Is Designed to Make You Suffer if You Join Another Player
Despite Musk’s character being ranked among the top 15 hardcore accounts, viewers notedglaring inconsistencies in Musk’s gameplay. He struggled with basic mechanics like inventory management and mana usage, overlooked valuable loot, and misidentified critical items—all unusual for someone allegedly experienced.
Cute. But it is uber cringe that you are pretending to know anything about POE beside running around and button mashing on characters you didn’t level. If would be much better if you actually owned where you are at in the game and played as best you can through the campaign. We…

His dismissal of these accusations hasn’t been any help to him either. People online have already pointed out glaring inconsistencies between Musk’s claimed rank and his in-game knowledge. So why is he deflecting instead of giving credible proof of his alleged achievements?
We’ll probably never know if he’s a real god gamer or a fake
Musk’s gaming credibility has been questioned before. In 2022, he became a meme within theElden Ringcommunity for his build which was incoherent and inefficient. More recently, in 2024, Musk claimed that he had a sub-two-minute clear in Diablo 4’s Artificer’s Pit. Not only was that not verified, but people are saying he could’ve easily hired someone. Which is what he’s already admitting to have allegedly done.
Path of Exile 2 Hasn’t Killed Diablo 4, but Together They’ve Overwhelmed Last Epoch
Even another controversial figure online such as Twitch streamer Asmongoldweighed in on the situation. If Musk can prove he personally leveled Percy_Verence to 97, Asmongold has vowed to stream on X for a year. The billionaire has yet to respond to this challenge. It’d be interesting for sure.
Musk’s playful dismissal of the allegations is definitely a bit weird. Sure he’s entitled to enjoy gaming in his own way, even if it involves outsourcing the grind. But a lot of people view his approach as disingenuous, especially when he flaunts achievements that don’t reflect his personal effort.
