The beginning of the film saw Maverick proving to all the skeptics including the head of the Darkstar program, that his ambition was achievable by reaching its desired speed (using a prototype).

However, as Maverick tries to push it further, the prototype malfunctions and is destroyed. The next thing we see is Maverick ending up in a random diner. Fans have been curious about this transition, and a popular theory has developed. It posits that Maverick did not survive the explosion, and the rest of the film is just his death dream of him trying to make amends for his past with Goose’s son Rooster.

WhenThe Hollywood Reportertold Kosinski about this theory, the director expressed his admiration for the mythic take on the whole thing. Kosinski loved the theory, stating that movies are a subjective medium and people’s interpretations of the film should be respected. He claimed that it is indeed a cool theory and wouldn’t throw cold water on it. The director said,
So I love hearing that theory, and certainly, there’s a mythic kind of element to the story that I think lends itself to that sort of interpretation, based on who Maverick is and what he represents and the fact that he’s kind of going through this rite of passage at a different phase of his life.
So I like that theory. Movies are things that are meant to be interpreted in your own way and based on how you see the world and the experiences that you’ve had. So I will not throw cold water on that. It’s a really cool interpretation of the story.
If the theory was true, the film would still be emotionally satisfying (with an added fantastical wish-fulfillment angle to it). But if this was true, the announcedTop Gun 3wouldn’t have been possible. Thus, it can be safe to assume that the filmmakers did not go along with the theory when they made the film.
