Spider-Man as a hero has had his fair share of crises of faith, facing overwhelming odds in his personal and superhero life. The comics and various media have seen the characters give up their identity as Spider-Man as the tragedies and problems of his life mount on him.
One such crisis of faith inSpider-Man: The Animated Seriessaw Peter Parker trying to give up being Spider-Man after he overhears J. Jonah Jameson being critical of one of his rescues, which could have genuinely cost thousands of lives. Madame Web pulled the web-head into another adventure, one that was supposed to restore his faith in being a hero. However, the episode had perhaps one of the most heart-breaking endings ever put to screen in an animated, superhero show.
Spider-Man voluntarily revealed his identity by the end of the story
The episode saw Spider-Man fighting it out with Doctor Octopus while struggling with whether he should continue as Spider-Man. However, on his adventures, Spider-Man is accompanied by one Maria Taina Elizando, a young fan of Spider-Man who looks up to him. The character appeared in two successive episodes of the show,Make a WishandAttack of the Octobot.

Towards the end of the show, Spider-Man is especially grateful to Maria for making him believe in himself again, and offer her any wish that she would want.
Maria asks to know Spider-Man’s secret identity, which Peter does with little hesitation. Spider-Man calls Maria the real hero when she praises the hero before the camera pans to the outside of Maria’s home, which audiences learn is actually a home for terminally ill children.
Maria is based on Timmy Harrison
Timmy Harrison in the comics was a young eight-year-old boy who was also a huge fan of Spider-Man, similarly suffering from a life-threatening disease. The character was depicted as having a lot of respect and love for Spider-Man. Peter Parker heard about the kid when he was at the Daily Bugle and visited him as Spider-Man.

Timmy showed off his collection of Spider-Man pictures to the hero (which Peter Parker had taken, of course), along with a few bullets he had dug out from walls where Spider-Man was shot at. While no life-threatening adventures occurred while the child was with Spider-Man, Timmy also asked to know who Spider-Man really was.
Spider-Man promptly reveals his identity to the young child, as was the case on the animated show as well. While Spider-Man has had a few crises of faith, he has always found a way to bounce back, usually due to some fan or friend being able to restore his faith in what Spider-Man does.
