If there’s one major change Ryan Condal did inHouse of the DragonSeason 2 that made fans’ blood boil – as well as George R.R. Martin’s – it’s the Blood and Cheese scene. It’s safe to say that no one in this fandom will ever be happy about it.

It is a major book event that fans waited for two years since the final episode of Season 1, only for it to happen in the most disappointing way. What’s more infuriating is that the showrunner defended his creative choice instead of acknowledging what he did wrong.
Ryan Condal Defends Blood and Cheese Scene as a “Crime Caper Gone Wrong”
The second season ofHouse of the Dragonopened with Daemon hiring two assassins, Blood and Cheese, to go after Aemond in revenge for the death of Rhaenyra’s son, Lucerys. They made their way to the Red Keep, but since they couldn’t find the one-eyed prince, they killed 6-year-old Prince Jaehaerys after asking Helaena which one of her twins was a boy.
House of the Dragon Season 3 Gets the Worst Update but There’s Still Good News After Second Season Debacle
This isn’t the case inGeorge R.R. Martin’sFire & Blood. The crown prince still died in the book, but the circumstances were different. It was not explicitly mentioned that Daemon commissioned the assassins, but they were only told “an eye for an eye, a son for a son.”
The murder of Jaehaerys happened in Alicent’s chamber, and when Helaena and her three children entered the room to say good night, they were trapped by Blood and Cheese after threatening to kill all of them if she didn’t pick which one of her boys she would sacrifice. She chose Maelor because he was younger, but they killed Jaehaerys instead. This event would go on to haunt and eventually cause Helaena’s s—cide.

House of the Dragon Fans Shouldn’t Give Up Hope as 1 Satisfying Death is Yet to Come at the Hand of House Stark
We will never see this happen in the show because ofRyan Condal’s decisions. The showrunner explained in the newly published bookHouse of The Dragon: Inside the Dawn of the Targaryen Civil Warthat he altered the circumstances around Jaehaerys’ death to make it look like “crime caper gone wrong.” Here’s the statement:
It’s a big event, and we wanted to cast it in a very real light. That’s why we built the idea around a revenge plot against Aemond that goes horribly awry. We wanted to make it feel more like a crime caper gone wrong versus these two highly competent psychopaths that go in and torture a family.

Condal’s confession of blatantly changing the plot to suit his own whim extremely vexed Martin following his now-deleted long rant about themodifications in Season 2.
Netizens Are Still Angry With Ryan Condal’s Creative Choices forHouse of the Dragon
Fans who were equally devastated by Condal’s decisions aired their frustration online. Some expressed annoyance over the showrunner’s creative choices, while others suggested he should just make his own story instead of ruining other people’s works.
Perhaps it is too late to repair the damages as the story is already in the middle of the civil war. Hopefully, there will be no more major changes in the upcoming seasons.

House of the Dragonis currently available to watch on HBO.
