Martin stated that he wished he had been able to write all hisA Song of Ice and Firebooks at once before publishing them as Gene Wolfe did with hisThe Book of the New Sunseries.

I had no other salary. I lived entirely on the money that my stories and books earned. I couldn’t take six years off with no income. I would have wound up homeless or something.

Thus, not having another job and solely relying on his writing, Martin envies Wolfe for the way he wrote all of the books and published them together while affording his lifestyle with his editor job. On the other hand, Martin wishes he had the same chance so that he could go back and fix things that did not end up making sense later in the series.

George R.R. Martin also regrets how famous he has gotten

George R.R. Martin is one of the biggest writers of his time. Thanks to the success of his books and the subsequentGame of ThronesandHouse of the DragonTV adaptations, he is easily one of the most recognizable faces in the world. Hence, no less than a celebrity today, he also regrets the fame.

While speaking at Oxford Writers’ House he revealed that he regrets he can no longer go out without people recognizing him.

In the old days… I could go to McDonald’s and have a cheeseburger and nobody would pay any attention to me, but that’s gone now. I probably did make a mistake when we got Game of Thrones going as a TV show. We were using a lot of unknown actors, so they did a lot of publicity with me. That really got my face out there, which wasn’t necessarily the greatest thing in the world.

Well, unfortunately, nothing can be done about that now. Given how he is yet to release the last two parts of hisA Song of Ice and Firebooks, the author will continue to draw attention, even more so since the last second book is more than 13 years late.
