Unlike Magik’s sword, Mjolnir is comparatively smaller and lacks range. As such, you may think Thor is purely a melee character.

While that is true for the most part, with the right combos, you can make the most out of the ranged attacks in his kit.
However, flying into battle without a plan with Thor can be a recipe for disaster. But worry not, here is a full explanation of how all of his abilities work, with useful tips and tricks to let you dominate your matches.

Thor Abilities Explained
Understanding Thor’s passive Thorforce is the most important thing you need to do when starting to play him.
When using Thor, you can see three little hammer-like icons below your crosshair. Out of his five main abilities, three of them rely on Thorforce. It grants you bonus health, but using any of the abilities that require Thorforce puts all of them on cooldown.

However, there’s more to the god of thunder than just one move, so here’s an overview of his whole kit below:
Description
Mjolnir Bash
Use Mjolnir to strike enemies. During the awakened state, you’re able to use it to launch lightning arcs forward.
Hammer Throw
You can use your alt-fire to throw Mjolnir at an enemy. This ability uses 1 Thorforce.
Storm Surge
Holding this ability makes Thor spin Mjolnir. Releasing it lets you dash or fly toward an enemy. Hitting a target with a Storm Surge will knock them back. This ability also uses 1 Thorforce.
Lightning Realm
Use this ability near enemies to restore Thorforce. You restore more of it when you hit more enemies.
Awakening Rune
Thor uses all 3 of his Thorforce hammers to enter an awakened state. During this, you get temporary Bonus health and can use Mjolnir Bash for ranged attacks.
Thorforce (passive)

Use any of the Thorforce abilities to get 100 Bonus health. Landing a Mjolnir Bash hit on an enemy while the hammer grows blue, will instantly restore one charge of Thorforce.
God of Thunder
Fly upwards to charge Mjolnir for a few seconds. Enemies within its charge range take lightning damage. you may ascend or descend to change your flight’s height while using the ultimate.

Thor Offensive Strategies
Now that you know how Thor’s abilities work, the real challenge and fun begins. Putting them into practice.
Thor players need to be very mindful of the battlefield and their cooldowns. While the Thorforce abilities only have a 2-second cooldown, they are interdependent. As such, using one will lock you out of the rest.
So, you need to know a handful of combos that will come in handy for different offensive situations.
Thor Defensive Strategies
Thor mainly has Storm Surge to escape fights. While it is a useful ability, and something heroes likeMagnetodon’t have. You cannot solely rely on it.
In fights where your team dies, and you are left alone holding the objective, you need some strategies to hold your own until your team arrives. So here are some defensive tips and tricks for such situations.
Thor Team-Up Abilities
Heroes Needed
Odinson Reborn (passive)
With Hela in team, if Thor dies during battle and Hela lands the final hit to kill an enemy, Thor will revive during the respawn phase. If he is already alive, then he gets bonus health.
Thunderous Deity (passive)
Thor infuses Thorforce to grant electrifying enhancements to Captain America and Storm. It lets Storm use lightning barrage on the enemies. Meanwhile, Captain America gets a movement boost, and his shield attacks electrocutes nearby enemies.
Captain America
Instead of having a single Team-Up ability, Thor has two. One in which he reaps the rewards, while the second one gives an advantage to his teammates.
Starting with Hela, it is understandable that Thor gets a buff when fighting alongside his sister. Odinson Reborn is a very useful passive, as Thor cannot easily restore health unless a health kit is nearby or a healer is in his vicinity.
Additionally, Hela being able to revive Thor just by getting a kill can help in making a comeback. Having a vanguard is very useful for capturing or holding an objective.
Thor’s passive Thorforce can be a game changer, not only for him but even for his fellow teammates, in this case, Storm and Captain America.
The best part is this ability doesn’t just work for one role. So, depending on your team’s needs for a duelist or a vanguard, picking Storm or Captain America could be the right call.
Thor Counters & How To Deal With Them
Thor is a well-rounded hero overall and doesn’t have many weaknesses. His kit gives him a handful of health boosts, thanks to Thorforce. Thor can even dash out of sticky situations with Storm Surge. However, the one area where he suffers the most is dealing with enemies with high mobility.
For the most part, Thor is a close-range fighter. So, when you have to face enemies likeIron Man, Star-Lord,orPsylocke, things are unlikely to go well.
All of the above heroes have plenty of moves which make it harder for Thor to hit them, and that’s before you even consider their ranged attacks.
Most vanguards shouldn’t be too much of an issue for Thor to deal with, but a goodVenomgives Thor a run for his money. In a one-on-one fight, Venom may be able to out-damage Thor as he has bonus health and can swing away from the battle to quickly grab a health kit or get to a healer.
The best strategy to deal with such enemies is stalling them while waiting for your team to back you up. If a flying enemy like Iron Man is making predictable moves, you can always use Awakening Rune to get ranged attacks.
But this will exhaust your Thorforce, preventing you from using Storm Surge. So, be aware of the battlefield and take action that best suits your current situation.
Best Team Comps With Thor
HelaandStormare the best duelists to pair up with Thor. However, Storm is a bit weaker compared to the rest of the heroes in her class. The added lightning powers give her much-needed help with her usually weaker kit.
As for Hela, she is one of the best duelists in the game right now. Even aside from the Team-up passive, the brother-sister duo complement each other well.
Hela can fly, which gives her an advantage in aerial and long-range combat. Meanwhile, Thor fights enemies up close. So, the coverage of different ranged fights can be very helpful to the team.
For vanguards, the best hero you should play with Thor isGroot. His ability to create walls is excellent for isolating enemies. So no matter if you are bashing them with your Mjolnir or shooting lightning arcs at them while awakened. Killing enemies can get a lot easier for Thor when playing with Groot.
Additionally, Groot can also help Thor out when he is low on health and needs an escape. All Groot needs to do is wall off an enemy while Thor Storm Surges out of harm’s way.
If you want to use Team-Up passives, thenCaptain Americais also a solid pick. It is important to remember that in this duo, Captain America is better suited to “tank” and hold objectives. In contrast, Thor should go for more aggressive plays.
Finally, if you need a good strategist for Thor, then you should go withCloak & DaggerorMantis. Both these heroes have quite an excellent range for healing their enemies from afar.
Dagger can help out Thor in a pinch with Lightforce daggers. And if Thor is extremely low on health, he can always Storm Surge back into Dagger’s Dagger Storm healing force field to get back to full health before rejoining the fight.
As for Mantis, she is not just a healer. She can give Thor a damage buff with her “Allied Inspiration” ability. Her “Spore Slumber” is also good for putting an enemy to sleep. Depending on the situation, this makes it easier for Thor to escape from them or to finish them off.
