Kraven the Hunteris a Marvel character known for his obsession with the universally beloved Spider-Man. Kraven (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), whose real name is Sergei Kravinoff, is the son of a brutal and ruthless Russian crime lord, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe). After leaving his home following the death of his mother, Kraven grew up to become the world’s greatest hunter.

As for the film, FandomWire film critic Matt Hambridge called the movie “uninspired, predictable, and generic.” So, how does a film with a 15% critical approval rate on the aggregate siteRotten Tomatoes(with 49 tomato-approved reviews) fit into the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU)? We explain below!

Are There Any Spidey Easter Eggs inKraven the Hunter?

For a studio that loves to remind audiences that any of their comic book entries is part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), there is a shocking lack of “Spidey” Easter eggs/ There is one nightmarish scene where Sergei has a bad dream about spiders crawling all over his body. However, that is more of an homage to the history of the character’s disdain for the web-slinger.

Of course, through the SSU filmography, you have had additional references in other films. For example, mention of the Daily Bugle and the Oscorp Corporation, creating a thematic link to the web-head.

Then there is the handful of mentions of the Marvel character, Miles Warren, otherwise known as “The Jackal.” Warren was a profressor and expert in the field of genetic research and biochemistry. However, little else is mentioned about Warren during the filmm other than we assume he was the one who helped Dmitri realize his powers and become “The Chameleon.”

How DoesKraven the HunterFit in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU)?

Kraven the Hunteris the latest film in the SSU, but reportedly the last. These films includeVenom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Madame Web,andVenom: The Last Dance. All of these characters are from the iconic Spider-Man catalog but are independent of the MCU. The studio, of course, took a dark, horror stance on their films, a decision that has plagued them.

Though it was an interesting strategy, reportedly, the idea was to lead up to the development of a Sinister Six movie. Of course, Kraven the Hunter is a well-known member of that team. Like Venom and Morbius, Kraven is part of the group known as Spider-Man’s rogues’ gallery. Even Cassandra Webb, used her clairvoyant powers known as the “Web of Life and Destiny.”

IsKraven the HunterPart of the MCU or SSU Canon?

Kraven the Hunteris part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe canon and not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, Marvel made a surprise move made infamous by the Morbius post-credits scene (hey, at least they had some), Marvel’s Vulture, and show Eddie Brock leaving behind a piece of a symbiote.

These efforts continue to highlight the antipathy of these characters and the great lengths they go to view the web-slinger as their enemy. Frankly, I am angry that Sony couldn’t do a competent job because a Sinister Six movie hunting Spidey should have been the goal. Kraven should have been the character to break through this darkSpider-Manphase.

Sadly, we may never know the joys of this storyline since Sony continues its vice grip on these unique characters.
