There’s no denying how influential the Resident Evil series has been in the world of Survival Horror. Even players that don’t actively dabble in the Horror genre have likely heard of Resident Evil, thanks to its slew of character crossovers in other titles, as well as its film series and animated adventures. Capcom has done an exceptional job keeping players on the edge of their seats with each Resident Evil title and has done well to listen to the fans over the years, returning to the Horror elements that made the franchise so beloved when it became “too action-centered” for some tastes.

The recent release of Resident Evil: Village was another amazing entry in the franchise and with a Resident Evil 4 remake on the horizon, players have a lot to look forward to for the series. But those that are anxiously waiting for the next installment can turn to these other Resident Evil-like releases to help fill the void.

9Silent Hill 2
Perhaps one of the closest titles “like Resident Evil,” Silent Hill has had its own successful franchise that has spawned some great (and terrifying) games over the years. Although fans should start from the original Silent Hill if they want to experience the entire franchise, perhaps the best game in the series is Silent Hill 2.
Not only does Silent Hill 2 have an amazing story, but it’s also filled with interesting (albeit strange) puzzles, Resident Evil-style combat, and the same janky camera that made the original Resident Evil such a surreal yet engaging experience. This should be the place that all Resident Evil fans start at, when looking for similar games.
8The Evil Within
Similar to Resident Evil, The Evil Within is a horror survival game that plays similarly to the iconic franchise, but with an updated feel. Very much its own game, The Evil Within is a surreal nightmare that dives into the mind of its protagonist, battling against all sorts of terrifying enemies and bosses along the way.
The Evil Within feels like a traditional Resident Evil title, featuring similar combat, puzzles, and terrifyingly tense moments, but forgoes the janky camera and tank controls for something much more palatable to the modern crowd. It’s definitely an experience Resident Evil fans should enjoy.
7The Last Of Us
Those that jumped in on Resident Evil for its zombie-slaying action will definitely enjoy their journey through The Last of Us. The title is similar in design to Resident Evil, with a duo of heroes fighting their way through hordes of infected and undead just to survive. The storyline for The Last of Us is much more concentrated than the large overarching plots of Resident Evil, giving it a much cozier feeling. Players should immediately find themselves invested in the story of Joel and Ellie, while simultaneously feeling drawn in by the entertaining and engaging gameplay.
The Last of Us is a must-have experience for anyone who enjoys the zombie and horror-survival genres.
6Haunting Ground
Similar in style to the Clock Tower series, Haunting Ground can be described as a terrifying mixture between Resident Evil and Outlast. Players will find themselves prowling around a palatial mansion, attempting to outrun the rather sadistic denizens that call the towering location, “home.” Players that love Resident Evil will find a familiar-feeling game complete with a third-person camera, long and foreboding hallways, tense moments, and some puzzles to solve. Unfortunately, similar to Outlast, they won’t be able to defend themselves well against their attackers. Instead, they’ll need to make use of their canine companion and outrun the dangerous foes that puruse them.
Haunting Ground flew under the radar for many but it’s quite an entertaining game.
Resident Evil in space sounds like a silly concept but the overall execution for Dead Space turns this seemingly off-the-cuff idea into a game franchise that is absolutely awe-inspiring. Although the most recent Dead Space was a bit too action-heavy for a Horror-hungry crowd, the original two games are perhaps some of the most stomach-churning, nail-biting games to ever hit the market.
Players that enjoy the Resident Evil series will find a lot of similar gameplay elements that feel “right at home” in Dead Space but should be aware that it’s very much its own game, with its own complexities and mechanics that make it feel like a completely fresh franchise in the genre.
4Alien: Isolation
Another Sci-Fi-inspired title, this one is much more Horror than even the original Alien films. Players won’t find themselves grabbing weapons and solving weird puzzles, nor will they fight powerful bosses. Instead, they’ll find themselves isolated, alone on a ship with one of the most predatory and terrifying alien beings in all of Hollywood.
Alien: Isolation takes a pre-established Horror monster and cranks up the dial to 11, making players feel absolutely helpless as they try everything in their power to hide from and escape the acid-spitting creature.
When it comes to feeling helpless and alone, there are few games as terrifying as Outlast. Alien: Isolation makes players feel suffocated by the idea that a Xenomorph is waiting somewhere to pounce on them, but Outlast introduces the player to the idea that danger could be lurking around every corner.
Armed with only a camcorder, players will have to hide, run, and outwit their ghostly opponents to survive the horrifying ordeal. Outlast does a fantastic job of keeping the player on edge by constantly introducing them to new threats.
2Dino Crisis
Herald by some as “Resident Evil with dinosaurs,” the Dino Crisis series is exactly as advertised. Players that enjoyed the puzzle-solving survival-horror that the original Resident Evil brought to the table will find themselves enamored with Dino Crisis. It’s every bit as “janky” as the original Resident Evil, with tank controls, terrible camera angles, and some truly tense moments. There are many out there that hold Dino Crisis in high regards and some fans are still a bit irate that the cult-classic hasn’t seen anything in the way of a revival.
Onimusha was definitely a title that flew under the radar for many. Although it looks like a simply samurai-inspired release from the outside, it’s actually much more sinister once players start making their way through the game. Onimusha is very much like a Resident Evil release. It features the same horror-esque camera angles, as well as an array of strange puzzles that players will need to solve.
All of this is wrapped up by hordes of demonic enemies that players must fight through using an array of weapons. It’s a great experience and a nice change of pace for those that want to experience something like Resident Evil in terms of gameplay.
