With more and more multiplayer games opting to go the free-to-play route these days, it’s now surprising when an online game is released with a price tag attached to it.

Most online games released in the last few years have opted to give out the game for free, and relied on the player base to spend money on cosmetics, Season Passes, and the like as the main revenue stream. It’s worked well for games such asMarvel Rivalsand the like, which is why it surprised us when developer Sloclap decided to release its arcade multiplayer sports game Rematch as a premium (read: paid) product.

According to the studio, they never even considered going the F2P route.

In an interview withGamesRadar, Creative Director Pierre Tarno explained why they never considered releasing the game in a free-to-play state, and even said they risked seeing the game “dead on arrival.”

Tarno explains that he “never considered free-to-play” as a sales model for the sports game, and adds that there is no one direction that’s a surefire way to make your game a hit, outside of making sure it’s a good game. “One of the things I love about making games is that there is no secret formula or anything, but the best way - or maybe the only way - to make a commercial success is just to make a very good game,” Tarno adds.

The dev adds that if a game is “original and solid,” and reasonably priced, “players will get it.”

Keep those sheets clean.

Given the game just reached three million unique players earlier today, according to the studio, I’d say Sloclap made the right choice. To put things in context, that equates to 11.8 million matches played and over 55.6 million goals scored.

Mind you, the game managed to nail this even without crossplay functioning, which is something thedevelopers explained. I imagine that once that’s sorted out, the player base should even be healthier.
