If you’ve been browsing Twitter this July 23, as a JRPG fan, you might have noticed several classic titles have been trending, fromChrono TriggertoNieR. What’s happening?

Thousands of Japanese Twitter users are currently following the Tokyo Olympics 2020 opening ceremony, which ended up including music from several series. Seeing Twitter is the most used social media in Japan by far, multiple games ended up in trends, such asChrono Trigger. Square Enix’s Japanese nickname,スクエニis currently trending withKingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy, and several games whose OSTs were featured.

The Olympics ceremony compiled all these game tracks in a huge medley. And while Square Enix JRPGs were heavily featured, you also had some Bandai Namco, Konami, Sega, and Capcom mixed in.

Some game developers have shared short rejoicing comments on Twitter too, includingSonic’s Yuji Naka, who’s now at Square Enix, or Akitoshi Kawazu, main creator of theSaGaseries. Yuji Naka also pointed outPSUwas featured but notPhantasy Star Online.

As pointed out by Tom James, game translator and dating sim specialist, some Twitter users also noted playingNieRmusic was ironically an acute description of the 2020 Olympics:

I’m sure you followed the Olympics these past few weeks. I don’t need to remind you how it didn’t fail to bring Japan under the spotlight, but for all the wrong reasons. This game music medley was definitely some high-level Genjutsu, but at least it’s always fun seeing people come together on Twitter like that. Though I wish some Nihon Falcom music would have gotten there as well.

Square Enix is currently working on several new entries for its classic JRPGs series.Final Fantasy XVIis coming to PS5 at some point, though there’s no release date estimate yet.Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Originis also happening. Meanwhile,Dragon Quest XIIwas also announced, but we haven’t seen any screenshots or gameplay yet. The only thing we know is that it’s supposedly “mature”, which doesn’t say much considering how dark certain games in the series already are, and that the trio, Horii, Toriyama, and sadly Sugiyama, are back on the game.
