Patrick Stewart is as legendary as an actor can get in their career. From starring as several iconic characters over the years to being knighted by the Queen herself, there is a reason why audiences love him as much as they do. However, like all in the film industry, Stewart also had a time when he was starting out and rather than being an inspirational figure, he had one of his own.

Stewart once revealed that he looked up to David Warner for most of his professional life, with him being his biggest inspiration as an actor. With this in mind, one can only imagine what it must have been like for the actor to work with his hero.
Tortured by One’s Savior?
In a part of his memoir,Making It So: A Memoir,Patrick Stewarttalked about one of the most memorable moments from his time working onStar Trek: The Next Generation. At one point in the series, David Warner ends up guest-starring. This was quite an impressive moment for the series, as a whole, considering how respected he was in the field.
However, his feature was especially momentous for Stewart, as he was getting an opportunity to work with his childhood hero. The actor confessed that he did not know that this was happening until the very last minute. However, when he did find out, he ended up experiencing a variety of emotions.

I was beside myself. All but one of my scenes in the episode were to be with him, and he was going to torture me! I didn’t feel worthy.

After he found out that almost all of his scenes in the episode would be with the actor, he could not contain his excitement. However, when he realized that Warner’s character would torture Jean-Luc Picard, he was overrun with feelings of unworthiness.
Patrick Stewart Did Not Feel Worthy
Later in his memoir, Patrick Stewart revealed that working alongside David Warner was a moment that made him realize the amount of success he was able to achieve in such a short amount of time. The actor stated Warner was excellent to be around, being kind to every person he met, and the pair ended up getting along really well.
When he arrived on the set, David was an absolute sweetheart, clearly delighted to be in ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation.’

However, Stewart could not help but feel like somewhat of an imposter. He mentioned that, at that moment, something did not feel right to him. He was having a realization about how quickly he was able to come this far in his career.

I’ll admit that it all felt a bit wrong, this dynamic. Through a strange and unlikely chain of events beginning with a last-minute invitation from David Rodes to perform at a UCLA event, I had become, in my forties and fifties, the leading actor in a major TV series. Now, here was the greatest star of the British stage when I was starting out, thrilled to be a guest actor on my show. Life is indeed strange.
Making appearances on talk shows, talking to his personal hero, and heading one of the most successful television shows of the time. It is safe to assume that the moment was quite a surreal experience for the actor.

Star Trek: The Next Generationis available for streaming on Paramount+.
