Netflix’sOne Piecelive-action has already earned a name for itself in the otaku field. Inaki Godoy’s portrayal of Luffy has been welcomed with open arms, and the live-action is a huge hit, with Netflix confirming its second season as well. But no matter how perfect the adaptation is, the harsh truth is that it can never rival the original anime and manga.

Inaki Godoy as Luffy in One Piece Live action

Inaki Godoy might have been the closest to representing Luffy perfectly, but the intensity of the character is best preserved in the anime and manga mediums. Despite the best efforts of the actor, the character is simply larger than life.

A perfect Luffy can never exist in a live-action adaptation ofOne Piece

Adapting a manga into an anime is a mammoth task that takes expertise, skill and hard work to properly translate. Creating a live-action adaptation is even tougher since the story suddenly becomes confined to reality. The One Piece live-action might have been a groundbreaking series, but at the end of the day, it can never come even remotely close toEiichiro Oda‘s creation.

Netflix Needs to See This Fanmade Video, Jason Momoa Has to Join One Piece Live Action Cast as Kaido to Fight Iñaki Godoy’s Luffy

The central character,Luffy, in particular, is extremely hard to adapt. His simple personality, along with the exaggerated and cartoonish antics and rubber-like powers, is hard to translate into a live-action format. Luffy is extremely playful, often runs on two brain cells at a time, and is often childish and carefree. His personality is the exact representation of his ideals of freedom and liberation.

Thus, recreating Luffy as an actor is a next-to-impossible job without making it look unbelievable.Inaki Godoywas a joy on the screen as Luffy, but at the end of the day, several issues persist. Luffy’s Devil Fruit adds to the hurdle even more. thus, striking the right balance between the elements of fantasy and grounding them in reality via performance is not as easy as it looks.

The pacing and other issues in theOne Piecelive-action have made things worse

The biggest criticism that theOne Piecelive-action has received is regarding its pacing. The original series has over 1000 episodes and chapters. The first season of the live-action action consisted of 8 episodes that adapted multiple arcs, which consisted of a total of 95 chapters. Condensing the storyline to this extent caused many important plot points to be skipped.

Some characters were left underdeveloped, backstories were cut off to an extreme level, and the rushed storytelling significantly impacted the series. Whileit was still a huge hit, not everyone was satisfied with how the whole production was handled. Add to that the challenges in visually portraying Luffy’s Devil Fruit powers, and the live-action just cannot compete with the anime/manga.

Season 2 of theOne Piecelive-action has already been confirmed and Netflix had initially announced it for a 2025 air date. However, Netflix has recently deleted the release date for the upcoming season, making fans question the motive behind such a move. Are the mistakes in Season 1 finally catching up to the production crew?
