TheJujutsu Kaisenending debacle inevitably raises questions about the author’s storytelling skills. For the majority of its run,Jujustu Kaisenwas a great manga that was eventually ruined by cheap thrills and unnecessary deaths. Gege Akutami fumbled hard while leading the story to its conclusion. However, there’s one thing nobody can take away from the author. Their ability to craft characters and a story while keeping the fan service at a bare minimum is phenomenal.

This is partially the result of Akutami’s inexperience with drawing female characters. Who knew inexperience was all that was needed to have some great female anime characters. In an interview with Tite Kubo, Akutami opens up about their process of creating female characters.
Gege Akutami’s Inexperience with Drawing Female Characters
Usually female characters are drawn in a way to appeal to the male audience. Instead of drawing characters who have their own motivations and goals, female characters are used as a tool to insert some fan service. Contrarily, the female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen are strong, independent, and empowering. They defy the pattern, the industry has followed for female characters.
“What the hell is so appealing about this guy?”: Gege Akutami Gave us One of Anime’s Blandest Characters in Jujutsu Kaisen That All Fans Fell in Love With
Additionally they debunk gender stereotypes and introduce a new category of characters, who are more than just their physical appearance. In a special talk withTite Kubo(via fan translations), Akutami was asked about the female characters of Jujutsu Kaisen and how they don’t confirm to gender norms.
No, that’s just me dodging the issue… I’m aware I suck at drawing women. Therefore, I’ve put the brakes on creating so-called “ladylike” characters.

Akutami further shared that the female archetype in Jujutsu Kaisen are not their preference. Although, the creator doesn’t think that the readers expect them to create lady-like characters or those with seductive features. It’s safe to say that Akuntami understood the JJK fandom quite well. Even though Akutami says that they don’t know how to draw female characters, they’ve done a great job.
Jujutsu Kaisenis Fan Service Done Right
Throughout the manga, Akutami has maintained a minimal amount of suggestive scenes. The characters are not put in situations where their physical traits are the central focus to conveniently appeal to the fans. Instead, Akutami has beautiful characters who have both conventionally feminine and masculine traits.
The female characters have muscular bodies which is a result of the training they’ve undergone to battle the curses. In the face of death, they stand strong and fight fiercely. Its not just with female characters, but fans love how Akutami has created Gojo, who caters to both the male and female gaze.

why’d this random redditor cook so hard talking about gojo???pic.twitter.com/tzgtLlOJ93
this is why everyone loves him he’s perfect, i don’t trust anyone who doesn’t like him (yes im looking at you gege)

Yeah like, he looks at the same time as a pop star and an athlete.A carefree and chill person, with a demon ready to be unleashed on his enemies.
Meanwhile Gege be like:pic.twitter.com/pE7ZyEKG6W

all gaze is so real actually
Instead of exposing the characters inappropriately, Akutami shows the character in a way where they can be seen exerting themselves. The heightened emotions appeal to fans on a deeper level. Nanami dragging Shigemo by the ponytail is a scene of pure rage, a new side of him emerged when his friend was threatened. Gojo’s fight inJujutsu Kaisen Zeroexhibits his inhumane abilities in a nonchalant manner.
Jujutsu Kaisen May Soon Replace Tite Kubo’s Bleach as the Most Disastrous Ending if Gege Akutami Can’t Justify Some of the Biggest Plotholes in 3 Chapters
Similarly Maki’s agility and the way she swings her weapons makes fans want to cheer for her. She leaves us awestruck with her skills. With that,Gege Akutamimight have figured out the best and most respectful way to incorporate fan service in anime and manga.
