AfterHalf-Life Alyx, many assumed the internet would be done with rumors aboutHalf-Life 3. Yet not only were the following years still filled with rumors, butgoing into 2025, we’re still getting claims that Valve has somemassive secretin the works for the Half-Life series.

With Valve owningSteam, the world’s most successful PC gaming site, it’s not like they’re given any reason to rush development. Like all Valve products, including thepopular Steam Deck, the company seems to take a quality-first approach, wanting to ensure everything released is up to standards.

Age of Empires Designer Thinks RTS Games Need to Evolve

Dave Pottinger, who worked on the Age of Empires franchise, believes that today’s real-time strategy games aren’t innovating enough.

WithHalf-Life 3being one of gaming’s mostmysterious enigmas, we’re not surprised to see more rumors continue into 2025. Yet, these rumors, even if they don’t indicate that thegame isprecisely in development, point to Valve stacking their team for something big in the future.

Half Life- Alyx: The Citadel

Theselatest rumorsfrom the notable creator Gabe Follower supposedly show thatValve is rehiring staff directly tied to the Half-Life series. Additionally, new tech and ideas are being developed that may have the potential to push the entire project to the finish line.

To understand why some of these rumors support the theory thatHalf-Life 3is in the works, it’s essential to understand the history ofprevious Valve projects. Unlike most gaming companies, Valve doesn’t simply release a game for the sake of releasing it.

As stated earlier, Valve owns Steam, the most successful PC gaming marketplace. Thus, its financial incentives differ significantly from those of the companies that chase a quarterly report. So, when making a game, leaders like Gabe Newell tend to only want to create something new when it pushes forward the boundaries of game creation.

It’s notable how, in the recentHalf-Life 2 documentary, Gabe Newell mentioned thatHalf-Life 2: Episode 3wasn’t canceled because of a lack of story but because the gameplay mechanics weren’t good enough to deserve another episode.

We could have shipped it [Half-Life 2: Episode 3]… my personal failure was being stumped, like, I couldn’t figure out why doing Episode 3 was pushing anything forward. - Gabe Newell

Some of the information in the leak hints at new technology, such as gravity modulation, being developed by Valve. If these new gameplay elements push gameplay forward, similar to how theSource enginedid with Half-Life 2, this could be a good sign that more is to come.

Additionally, the claims hint that the title is already undergoing closed playtesting.Although this isn’t concrete evidence that anything significant is coming soon, if true, it means that some important steps have already been made.

Valve Has Begun Stacking Its Team

Like a world series team before the season begins, it appears Valve has begun hiring an expert team to bring together the nextHalf-Lifetitle. Besides hiring amazing digital artists and programmers,Valve has re-hired staff who’ve worked on previous Valve games, including Half-Life 2.

Yes, this means staff members who left after games likeLeft 4 DeadandHalf-Life 2suddenly returned to Valve without public explanation. Given Valve’s unique company hierarchy, it can often be somewhat difficult to get a project off the ground, but these team members likely returned for a good reason.

This evidence shows thateither Valve is developing a heavy-hitting Half-Life title soon or that a notable title is in development that will allow past team members to be resurrected.

Forget blockbuster AAA games! We want some plucky little indies!

To be fair, Valve does have a lot more on its plate than it had in previous years. WithDeadlockreaching a solid player base and Valve continuing work onSource 2, which was used forCounter-Strike 2, this new technology and these staff members could very well be used for various other projects.

Yet Valve still seems to be reigniting the spark ofHalf-Life. In 2024, Valve released aHalf-Life 2documentary and the entireHalf-Life 2package for free on Steam for the title’s20th anniversary. These releases helped remind gamers why these titles are so important in the history of gaming.

Personally, I had the feeling that this was a massive hint that Valve still cares for usHalf-Lifefans and possibly has something in the works for us. I hope I’m not alone on that. So, despite all these rumors, a 2025 Half-Life announcement is still very rare, but we’ll have to wait and see.
