Donald Trump’s inauguration has come with a set of executive orders and a promise that the USA is now entering its Golden Age. However, what has caught a lot of people’s eye is the fact that Trump’s speech at the inauguration has some eerie similarities with one antagonist’s monology in Christopher Nolan’s superhero film.

Bane was one of the few Batman villains who had the honor of getting the Christopher Nolan treatment in his Batman trilogy, and his monologue, in which he takes over Gotham, seems to have some similar phrasing to what Donald Trump said at his inauguration.

Trump’s ‘giving power to the people speech’ might be a little ill-phrased

A slew of people on the internet have identified the parallels between Trump and Bane’s speech. Given the manner in which a lot of people who had rooted for Kamala Harris are reacting toDonald Trump‘s inauguration, the comparison with Bane only seems reasonable at this point. In the speech, Trump says:

We are transferring power from Washington D.C. and giving it back to you, the people.

This is being compared toTom Hardy‘s Bane, when he said:

We take Gotham from the corrupt! The rich! The oppressors of generations who have kept you down with myths of opportunity, and we give it back to you… the people. Gotham is yours. None shall interfere. Do as you please. Start by storming Blackgate, and freeing the oppressed! Step forward those who would serve. For and army will be raised. The powerful will be ripped from their decadent nests, and cast out into the cold world that we know and endure. Courts will be convened. Spoils will be enjoyed. Blood will be shed. The police will survive, as they learn to serve true justice. This great city… it will endure. Gotham will survive!

The full quote certainly can be read as something that has some parallels to Trump’s presidency, or even his election campaign leading up to his victory. A lot of Bane’s speeches were filled with political rhetoric that is often parroted by politicians, regardless of the side they are on.

Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy was filled with political messaging

Christopher Nolan’s Batman films were rife with political messages that took a more realistic tone to Batman’s mythos, evenif the man himself says otherwise. From terrorism to corporate espionage, to outright questions of policing and surveillance, were all themes that the films explored in a pretty nuanced way.

A lot of parallels can be found between real-world events and what happened on screen during the Dark Knight trilogy, specifically because of how stepped the films were in American politics. Even dialogues like ‘I am not wearing hockey pads’, which might come off at first as a simple comedic riff, but ends up revealing a lot about how the mindset of the character can affect the way in which people look at Batman in a politically active space like Nolan’s version of Gotham.
