The movie has raised eyebrows for the spectacular action sequences and the gravity of the origin story of the title character after the movie’s premiere at Cannes.

Cannes audiences also honored the Miller-directed movie starring Anya Taylor-Joy as Furiorsa with a seven-minute standing ovation. Further, the critical accolades were an indicator of the fact thatFuriosawould be the next big hit in the franchise. However, the expectation of the movie took a U-turn when the movie debuted in the theaters on 23 May.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagaopened with a disappointing $32 million domestic gross despite the four-day Memorial Day weekend, while the movie only claimed $36.5 million worldwide. Budgeted $168 million (perScreenRant), the movie needs to make at least $336 million or $466 million to see the profit.
Unless the movie hits a miraculous acceleration at the box office, the post-apocalyptic wasteland action flick would potentially close the doors for more installments in the franchise, particularly,The Wasteland.“I’ll definitely wait to see how this [Furiosa] goes, before we even think about it,”Miller said after the movie’s Cannes premiere (viaThe Hollywood Reporter).Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the prequel toTom HardyandCharlize Theron’sMad Max: Fury Road, still has time, but it’s unlikely that the movie will become the hit it was expected to be.

Furiosa: A Mad Max SagaMet With A Disappointing Response From Female Audience
Inherently,Furiosa: A Mad Max Sagais a female-driven movie chronicling the origin story of Furiosa, who appeared inMad Max: Fury Road, with Theron playing the strong female character. Taylor-Joy played the younger version of the character in the prequel movie, but fans have dearly missed Theron in the role.
