The first screen you see when you start a run is this party selection screen, forcing a hard choice on the players right from the get-go. Knowing which party members are going to be useful is useful information to have, particularly because higher difficulties are almost impossible to get through unless you’ve near-encyclopedic knowledge of the game or the perfect party to face the challenge.

Optimal Party Composition Overview
Players in For The King 2 will havefour slots to fillto complete their party before setting out on a run withcharacters they unlockby playing through the campaign. Having agood mix of Physical and Magic damageis going to be crucial for your party to be ready for any fight. Enemies in the game are almost always specialized fighters with either really high armor to negate physical damage or really high magic resistance to negate incoming magic damage. Having a mix of damage in your party allows the party members to cover each other’s weaknesses to deal with any threat.
That said, I like to have my party fill four distinct roles that I strive to fill to cover all bases.
Party Slot 1: Tank
While in the original For The King, Tanks were a bit of a joke, they’re much more useful in the new game simply because of the protect mechanic, which makes it so that any party member standing on the tile behind the Tank is immune to single-target damage as long as the Tank is holding a shield. This makes glass cannon characters like the Scholar much less likely to die during a fight, ensuring their survival.

Party Slot 2: Physical DPS
The Physical DPS is responsible for taking out low-armor enemies as quickly and efficiently as possible. Although most Physical DPS charactersdoget access to AoE damage with bigger and better weapons, it’s not a part of their base toolkit. They’re most efficient when taking out single enemies.
Party Slot 3: Magic DPS
The Magic damage dealers are meant to take out extremely high armor enemies who are unlikely to take damage from physical attacks without wasting a couple of turns. Magic DPS characters almost always have access to some form of AoE damage, allowing them to take out trash mobs like bats and pixies easily.
Party Slot 4: Utility
The benefits of a good utility character cannot be overstated during the course of the run. The Herbalist is my go-to as she has access to AoE healing during dungeons as well as in the overworld, making her an incredible healer. The Pathfinder can be quite useful on higher difficulties when the chaos meter fills up very quickly, and you need to make a beeline for the nearest objective without having the ability to explore the map.

For The King 2 gives you complete freedom when deciding what your party is going to be. There isno rule that says you have to have four members in a party; you’re able to go out solo if you want to. And the game doesn’t prevent you from filling out your entire party with four Friars either (a very viable party composition, in fact). Buthaving variety not only makes the game easier but also adds more variety to each run, allowing for different interactions.
