As George R.R. Martin said, there are stories within stories in his fantastic historical account of the Targaryen dynasty. With all the characters and plot lines that have entertained and amused fans over the years, he could still come up with narratives in between what seemingly looks like minor events.

In fact, there is one aspect during the reign of King Jaehaerys Targaryen that many fans would find reminiscent of HBO’sSuccession. Well, both franchises revolve around themes of politics, hierarchy, and power, so they definitely share a lot of things in common.
George r.r. Martin discussed the controversial succession during the reign of Jaehaerys Targaryen
The rule of Jaehaerys Targaryen has always been highly regarded as he is considered one of the good kings. He notably fathered 13 children, and in an interview viaPenguin Random House,George R.R. Martinsaid the succession in his line was very solid: “He had the proverbial heir and a spare, two very competent sons, Aemon and Baelon.”
Unfortunately, Aemon was killed during the Myrish Bloodbath when he was shot by a crossbow bolt that was not even intended for him. This tragedy changed the course of the succession in the Targaryen family. He was the Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the throne, but that vanished into thin air in just a blink of an eye.

“Suddenly, the whole succession was thrown into doubt,” Martin remarked, and later added, “And in some ways, you could say that was one of the first things that caused the Dance of the Dragons.”
This is where the exciting and familiar part comes into the picture. Aemon’s death caused a conflict within the house. His only child was a daughter, Rhaenys, whom we all know as the Queen Who Never Was. As per tradition, King Jaehaerys chose his other son, Baelon, as the new heir.

Evidently, the proverbial “heir and spare” that Martin mentioned came in handy, but not without a cost. While fans look at the feud between the Blacks and the Greens as the start of the Dance of the Dragons, it had been silently brewing since the death of Aemon.
HBO needs to make a newSuccession-inspiredGame of Thronesspinoff
The whole drama within Jaehaerys I’s family will definitely make for an interesting live-action adaptation. It is pretty much reminiscent of the family hierarchy inSuccession, in which it also had its own heir and spare in the form of Kendall Roy and Roman Roy.
Since Martin is quite eager to produce more spinoffs for the franchise, perhaps HBO could turn the interesting life of the Old King and his children into reality. This way, fans can have a deeper understanding of the events that transpired inHouse of the Dragon.
