BeforeBethesdatook over theFalloutfranchise with 2008’s Fallout 3, the series looked very different.

Instead of a first-person open-world Western RPG, the original Fallout games were top-down, isometric(ish, officially, they’re trimeric) games with turn-based combat.

Some also argue that the original titles, developed by Interplay Games, are the best in the series.

Every Fallout Game Ranked By Story

Every Fallout game has its own unique story, but some stories are better than others.

While you’re still able to boot these games up today in their original form, some people are clamoring for a full-blown remake or remaster, akin to what we just saw withThe Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Fallout 1 - The Master

On the one hand, I see it: even if all these games get is a graphical update, that can go a long way to making these beloved games more approachable for a new audience. There’s no need to tweak the gameplay, especially given the popularity of games likeBaldur’s Gate 3.

Sadly, I wouldn’t expect these remasters to happen anytime soon. Honestly, don’t expect them to happen, well, ever.

Fallout Franchise Creator Tim Cain Explains Why We’ll Likely Never See Fallout 1 and 2 Remastered

Tim Cain recently explained the challenges of remastering the original Fallout games on hisYouTube channel. The biggest challenge with a possibleFalloutremaster isn’t just a single problem. There are actually three separate issues: legal issues, technical issues, and subjective issues.

Perhaps the biggest problem is the fact that, according to Cain, he doesn’t have a copy of the source code anymore. He states that he assumes Bethesda has a copy of it, but there are additional legal hurdles, such as licensing rights.

Bethesda Asked Oblivion Remastered Players How To Improve The Game And Got More Than They Bargained For

People have LOTS of ideas to improve the game.

While those hopeful for Fallout Remasters can wonder if Todd Howard and the team at Bethesda could take matters into their own hands, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Don’t expect this, either.

“The main priority for us is to make sure that [Fallout 1 and 2 are] available and that you can still play them,” he said in an interview withMrMattyPlayslast year. “So on PC, obviously they’re still there for people to go and play, and we’re making sure that they run okay. As far as beyond that? We’ve talked about it, but our priorities in terms of doing dev work haven’t been in those areas.” Despite the desire to modernize the games, Howard makes it clear that he doesn’t want to change how Fallout 1 and 2 play out just for the sake of making things feel more modern.
