Instead of a new entry in the mainline series, Capcom is likely set to announce either of two new remakes–Resident Evil 0orCode Veronica.Since Capcom has a marketing deal with Sony forResident Evilgames, these would likely be announced at Sony’s summer showcase.
Remember that right now, all of these are just rumors. Even though leakers like Dusk Golem have so far shown themselves to be largely accurate, you should still wait for any official announcements from Capcom directly.
Everything That Is Rumored So Far About Resident Evil 9
The upcomingResident Evil 9is expected to be the most ambitious game in the series andthe first with an open world. Originally intended to be the next mainline chapter, the game has been in development since 2017, following the release ofResident Evil 7.The next mainline entry after 7,Resident Evil Village, which was initially intended to be a spin-off to 7 became a mainline game and this pushed backResident Evil 9even further down.
Even with the leaks, the identity of the game’s protagonist has not yet been confidently revealed. However, some have suggested that Leon Kennedy could be the protagonist of the prologue and possibly the entire game.

As of right now, it is impossible to guarantee his involvement or lack thereof. It will feature a different protagonist from Ethan Winters from Village andResident Evil 7, as his story was wrapped up inResident Evil 8,and his daughter’s story was wrapped up in theShadows of RoseDLC.
Regarding the location, a few leakers have suggested that it could be an island in Southeast Asia. That does sound fascinating, and it could make for an open-worldResident Evilgame with a somewhat different feel. Additionally, the leaker advises against raising your expectations for an announcement at this summer’s PlayStation Showcase or Summer Game Fest.
