It may seem as if Rare’s IPEverwildhas kind of vanished into the atmosphere, but it’s still very much alive and apparently is set to be a “very unique” game from the creators ofSea of Thieves. The reason behind the silence surrounding the game is also explained.

In aninterview with Polygon, studio head Craig Duncan talked aboutEverwild, saying, “we’re definitely idea-first,” and says that “We will bet and incubate and nurture the idea we think is great, and then we’ll assume that all the business side of it will figure itself out as we go.”

Craig talks about howSea of Thievesgrew from having thousands of players until eventually, the game reached a point monthly updates became the norm and says that the game ended up growing with the players. “I think that suits Rare as a model — particularly if you’re making a game where players have to get can imprint themselves onto it.”

He goes on to talk about how the game’s themes look to have players get lost in the world, “I think with Everwild, Louise [O’Connor] and her leadership team are really passionate about giving players a world that they can just lose themselves in — you know, a lot of nature feels magical. So the notion of, ‘What does it mean to nurture a world? What does it mean to be in nature?’ If you’re following any of the developers behindEverwildyou’ll have probably seen them spending a lot of time in the outdoors, more so during pre-COVID-19 times.

“Part of the reason we haven’t talked a lot aboutEverwildis because we’re still feeling a lot of these things out. We’re still playing around with gameplay ideas.” Duncan explains, “We’ll have plenty to say in the future on that, but … we have an idea we feel really passionate about, and we think there’s something special. I have a team of people that wake up every morning with the desire to make this game that they’re really, really passionate about.”

While details behindEverwildis fairly hush-hush right now, we do know that the team consists ofdevelopers fromTotal WarandConker’s Bad Fur Day,as well as thelead designer fromFable Legendsjumping on board this year. One thing that has been noted is that accessibility is being kept in mindduring promoting the gamewhich means the game itself could end up being an incredibly accessible game.
