Those who would like to host their games on Epic Games Store will only need to pay a $100 submission fee and comply with a series of requirements. And if the game does not contain full-on pornography, any indie developer can now use the self-publishing tools and sell their games on the store.
There is no doubt that this change will have a massive impact on developers' platform choices in the future. While this undoubtedly strengthens Epic’s hand againstValve’s storefront,Steamremains the most prominent platform on PC both for AAA and indie developers. That said, Epic’s humble revenue split of 12% will almost certainly attract thousands of game makers to host their games on Epic Games Store. Steam, on the other hand, adopts the traditional 70/30 revenue split.
It is safe to say that theFortnitedeveloper has passed a solid milestone in its rivalry against Steam. Especially with its tempting revenue split, the PC storefront should start offering a ton of indie games soon. While that spells good things for indie developers, Epic does not seem like it will go soft on games with mature content like Steam, though. While Valve’s storefront has been quite flexible with games that include mature content, Epic Games Store directly states that it will not allow pornography and products with Adults Only ratings.
The gaming giant also requires developers who previously put their titles on other stores to support compatibility. For example, if the game has online elements, it must be compatible with the Steam or GOG version of the said title. The storefront also wants developers to ensure that their games come with achievements if they have them on other platforms.
Epic Games Store has now become another platform on which game developers can sell their titles. That being said, the guidelines and the requirements indicate that Epic prefers a more cautious approach compared to Steam.
That’s because the latter hosts the release of hundreds of indie titles every week, making the Steam storefront the de-facto platform for many indie developers worldwide. While Steam’s policies render it a prominent source for hosting PC games, it also makes sifting through the massive library difficult for customers due to the sheer volume of low-effort indie games.
