The free-to-play mobile version of the multiplayer shooter developed by Industrial Toys,Battlefield Mobile, was eventually canceled in January 2023. The game was no longer developed after conducting beta tests in a few regions in November 2022. The announcement was made as part of EA’s Q3 2023 financial results, which also revealed the cancellation ofApex Legends Mobileand the postponement ofStar Wars: Jedi Survivor.
Similar toApex Legends Mobile,Battlefield Mobilewas intended to function independently of its PC and console counterparts, with no cross-play or cross-progression. It would also have its own distinct rewards, battle pass seasons, and cosmetics. However, the revival of this project might have strengthened EA’s base in the future handheld market, which has huge potential.
Why Did EA CancelBattlefield Mobile?
In the world of mobile gaming,Battlefieldwould have been a great addition to EA’s crown. Although the company already had a feather in its crown inApex Legends Mobile, it’s still unclear why it was canceled. But in the case ofBattlefield, EA wants to unlock the franchise’s enormous potential, which wasn’t possible, as per the company. This is what EA stated on itswebsite:
We’ve also made the decision to stop the development of the current Battlefield mobile title. As the industry has evolved and our strategy to create a deeply connected Battlefield ecosystem has taken shape, we decided to pivot from the current direction to best deliver on our vision for the franchise and meet the expectations of players. We remain highly committed to unlocking Battlefield’s enormous potential. We’re hard at work evolving Battlefield 2042 and are in pre-production on our future Battlefield experiences across the globe.
What the cancellation of this highly ambitious project means for Industrial Toys, the company that spearheaded the project’s development, is currently unknown. The studio was purchased by EA in 2018.

EA made it apparent thatBattlefieldis still in the works. A“connected Battlefield universe”with several interconnected games, including a single-player campaign-focused entry from a new studio founded byHaloco-creator Marcus Letho, was part of the publisher’s 2021 announcement.
EA Should ReviveBattlefield Mobile
The console giants are gradually realizing that it’s the handheld market where they have to hit. Right now, there is only the Nintendo Switch, which is the only proud member of the highly powerful handheld console club.
