You may have noticed that some of your friends are playingKoei Tecmo’s Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends Definitive Editionon Steam for PC – but what is it? With little to no advertising on the game, the whole launch was done relatively stealthily for the gaming industry.
The History of Dynasty Warriors 7
But first, let’s jump into the history of the game.Dynasty Warriors 7was released for the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 back in March 2011, however only Japan received a PC port of the game a year later. As usual, Koei Tecmo also released an expansion,Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends, that as a standalone added three new characters (Guo Jia, Wang Ji, and Pang De) who was playable inDynasty Warriors 5already, more weapons, and the Legend Mode that featured “Hero” stages for characters that had only minor roles in the big story mode of the game. The expansion also featured stages from olderDynasty Warriorsgames labeled as “Legend” stages.
Both the originalDynasty Warriors 7as well as theXtreme LegendsExpansion received a ton of DLC in the form of costumes, weapons, music, and especially stages that were playable in theConquestandLegendmodes of the game.

What’s included in Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends DE
Koei Tecmo actually released the complete package of both games combined together with all the DLC (except one pre-order costume to the PC as Shin Sangoku Musou 6 with Moushouden), but only released it in Japan.
However, out of nowhere, on August 10, 2025 we got a multilingual release of the game on Steam. Here are all additional features listed that were previously DLC inDynasty Warriors 7andXtreme Legends:

Publisher Koei Tecmo states that all additional content is available from the get-go on its steam, page which is actually not true.
you’re able to indeed choose any of the additional costumes in every game mode or listen to the additional music tracks in theConquestandLegendmodes. Additionally, you don’t have to unlock characters like you would in the originalDynasty Warriors 7release. However, all the additional stages for theConquestandLegendmodes have to be unlocked through playing both modes. While most everything is unlocked, don’t expect to be able to dive into all of the content from the moment you boot up the game.
And unlocking those stages takes quite a while since you have to beat both the Story mode with all four fractions, theConquestmode, and theLegendmode to get all of the additional 109 scenarios. However, many of them are stages from the previous sixDynasty Warriorsgames and it is pretty fun to play one of the classic stages from the PlayStation 2 games with better graphics and theDynasty Warriors 7gameplay features. As a quick unofficial estimate, unlocking all of this content will likely take you over 30 hours of gameplay.
What else is included?
Speaking about the graphics, they are mainly the same as in the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions. However, the PC port offers higher resolutions and has additional visual options like Depth of Field. You can also increase the number of enemy soldiers now, choose to have a Bloom effect, and change other details like the fog distance, dynamic shadows and how detailed the textures are. It is still not a big difference to the classic versions, even with everything maximized. Worth noting, I had no problems with the frame rate. Unlike theDynasty Warriors 8port from years ago and the recentWarriorsgames released for consoles, this game runs super-smooth.
If you are a huge fan of online play, you will be out of luck.Dynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends DEremoves the online modes of the game that were included in classic releases. However, the game does still offer split-screen play options for nearly every game mode. Mixed in with the removal of trophies or achievements, it’s worth noting that this is not a “complete package.”
Last but not least is the relatively low price of $19.99. Alone, the classicDynasty Warriors 7was already a big game that offered easily over 50 hours of slashing your way through ancient China. If you want to conquer and see really every stage inDynasty Warriors 7: Xtreme Legends Definitive Editionyou will spend a lot more time with this title.
It will be interesting to see now if Koei Tecmo is going to release more “Definitive Editions” of their older games. They already announcedSamurai Warriors 4 DXfor the PlayStation 4 and the Nintendo Switch, as well asDynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends Definitive Editionfor the Nintendo Switch and Windows Store. However, this stealth release ofDW7XLDEmight indicate that we are going to see more complete editions of older Koei Tecmo games on PC as well.
You can grab this edition of the game only on Steam right now.
