There’s been a lot of divisiveness recently with the launch ofDragon’s Dogma 2. Rising from the original’s status as a middlingly reviewed cult classic, a lot of fans of the newest game in the series, which released on March 22, are already marking it off asa Game of the Year contender, and we’re still in the first quarter of 2024.
Conversely, there are plenty of naysayers who have taken issue with a lot of things about the game, from itsinclusion of microtransactionsto its performance. While microtransactions are an almost guaranteed way to draw the ire of your player base, the latter of these two issues seems to be centered mostly around the frames-per-seond rate on PC as opposed to consoles (although there are some detractors there as well).

There’s apopular thread on Redditright now calling out people who take issue with these two complaints, particularly the performance issue. But while much of the discussion is focused on personal experience, digging into the comments reveals one string that calls into question an interesting demographical question: is a high FPS rate something that only matters to younger gamers?
Considering that the originalDragon’s Dogmawas released almost 12 years ago, in May 2012, this might be the perfect game to spark that discussion. Said one player, who reports to be 36 years old, “When I was younger I’d regularly attempt to play games beyond what my pc could handle and just always played anyway because I enjoyed the game. I’m loving this game and can’t wait to play more.”
Of course … there’s always the possibility that a lot of gamers are simply loading up Dragon’s Dogma 2 on outdated hardware.
Interestingly enough, several other commenters seem to be backing up this trend, with those exceeding (or in one case, approaching) the age of 30 rather dismissive of the low performance rate of Dragon’s Dogma 2, while those self-identifying as being in their 20s are taking more offense to the low FPS they’ve been experiencing. One player, Reddit user Queso_D_Nachos, who reports as being 21, commented, “The 30fps is inexcusable in my opinion but nonetheless I’m having a blast playing on ps5.”

What was supposed to be one of the biggest releases of the year has quickly turned into a massive disappointment.
Are The Computers Up To Snuff?
Of course, since the performance complaints seem to be coming mostly from the PC player base, there’s always the possibility that a lot of gamers are simply loading up Dragon’s Dogma 2 on outdated hardware. This could skew the question of how much a high FPS matters to players in certain age ranges.
Even in trying economic times, younger gamers are likely to have less disposable income than older ones. And in this case, more disposable income can lead to more ease in upgrading or replacing a behind-the-times gaming PC or laptop. Following this train of thought, its entirely possible to reach two conclusions: that a higher percentage of younger players are trying to run the software on machines that don’t meet the reccommended standards, and that older players — who trend towards having better financial means of upgrading their hardware — might be experiencing Dragon’s Dogma 2 at a startling difference performance rate.
Whatever the case, it’s unlikely this argument is going to die down anytime soon, but each side of this debate couldtry to have a little more insightinto what the other is thinking.
