Dragon Ball Super: Brolyis the 20th movie of the franchise, and after its release, it became the highest-grossing anime film of 2018. It was also a huge hit in the United States and Canada, and all of Akira Toriyama’s efforts for the movie have paid off.

Just like otherDragon Ballmovies, Akira Toriyama was personally involved with this film. From the story to the screenplay and even checking on character designs, the creator left no stone unturned to makeBrolya huge hit, and he, like always, didn’t disappoint.
Akira Toriyama Made Characters Slimmer for theDragon Ball Super: BrolyMovie
Naohiro Shintani was granted the role of animation supervisor in theDragon Ball Super: Brolymovie. He auditioned for the role, like many others, and Akira Toriyama was impressed by his drawings of Goku, Vegeta, and Bulma, which urged him to recruit Shintani.
Inan interviewregarding the film, Shintani talked about the changes thatAkira Toriyamasuggested for the characters.

Even Toriyama has made the characters less muscular than they appeared in the past, so I made a conscious effort to evoke a slim muscular style like he does.
Since Naotani had not worked on many series that included buff and muscle men, he was already having a tough time creating the looks ofDragon Ballcharacters. But in the film, Akira Toriyama made the pre-existing characters less muscular than they previously were.

Thus,Broly was also createdin the same way. Despite the character being more buff than Goku and Vegeta, he had to be slimmed down. But part of the reason the character designs were changed could be so that Broly looked more buff in comparison to the others, while not being overly muscular and ugly.
The Role of Shading inDragon Ball Super: Broly
In the interview, Shintani was asked which aspects of the action scenes he was more particular about as the animation supervisor of the film. Shintani replied that while the common scenes don’t have a lot of shading when the scenarios prepare for battle mode, the shading increases. The muscles of the characters pop out more and provide a greater contrast, which leaves a cool impression.

The shading technique was not used throughout the movie since that would weaken the impact of the important parts that actually needed attention. The director wanted to have visuals that would clearly state it’s time for battle.
Dragon Ballis all about action scenes, so specially skilled action sequence animators were hired to work on those parts. Apparently, the animation supervisor was always awe-filled whenever he checked their work. While Shintani made sure that the characterization in everyday scenes came through, he always let the action animators do whatever they liked.

Dragon Ballmanga is available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
