The Universal Survival Saga ofDragon Ball Superbrought back the classic Tournament of Power. Except, this time, the participants were more universal than before (in the literal sense of the word).

In this saga, warriors from multiple universes partake in the Tournament of Power. The arc also features debuts of some elite fighters, but fans noticed some familiar participants who might not be up to the mark. So why were they included in a battle of the universe’s strongest?
Two Controversial Fighters Included in the Tournament of Power
The promotional poster for the Universal Survival Saga included images of participants of theTournament of Power. It included fearsome fighters like Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, and Piccolo, and the strongest fighters from Universes 1-12. However, among themstood Krillinand Master Roshi, two characters whose presence is debatable.
Master Roshi and Krillin are extremely popular characters as well as some of the first ones who were introduced inDragon Ball.Master Roshi, the perverted hermit, was the one to teach Goku the Kamehameha move. Krillin, on the other hand, is Goku’s oldest comrade.

After the Majin Buu arc, Krillin retired from martial arts and decided to live a wholesome married life with his wife and daughter. In the first saga of Dragon Ball Super, Krillin is seen with his family, and at one point, he even worked as a police officer. He does get involved again in the later sagas but never receives a major role.
Why did Akira Toriyama Select Krillin and Master Roshi inDragon Ball Super?
When the participants in the tournament were being discussed the suggestion of Krillin and Master Roshi faced severe debate. Later, Goku confirmed that Krillin had resumed training and he was confident that Krillin could hold his own. Master Roshi, on the other hand, was selected because his usage of tricks can be extremely effective in battle.

According to Hiroyuki Sakurada, Toei’s producer forDragon Ball Super, the ban on flying forces participants to focus on tactical strategies. Master Roshi is a master of such techniques. Since flying is prohibited, it would lead many fighters to face difficulty.
In an interview Sakurada expressedhow he considers the selected fighters to be the best choice for the tournament:

Isn’t Master Roshi pretty strong? There are things both he and Krillin can do. In addition to the question of Gohan getting his fighting instincts back, we can look forward to how these characters play their roles in this upcoming arc. It was Toriyama’s idea to assemble these ten characters, and I think it’s quite the interesting lineup.
Flight is an essential and ingrained capability for any fighter inDragon Ball. Many moves can’t be performed unless the flight ability is mastered first. But since flying itself is forbidden, even Krillin and Master Roshi stood a chance in battle.

As there is a ban on flying, this battle’s focus will move to a primarily tactical based one. Due to this, there will most likely be a place for Krillin and Master Roshi to shine, even though their power level is lower than Goku’s.
None of the two disappointed Goku and their other Universe 7 comrades as both Krillin and Master Roshi took down their fair share of competitors. In fact,Master Roshi even overcamehis weakness of not fighting against women.
