While the return of Robert Downey Jr. sparked a lot of excitement among fans of the MCU, there is a section of the fandom that has viewed this move as a complete and utter mistake. While Iron Man was a very celebrated character in the MCU, thanks to Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal, bringing the actor back to play one of the most iconic villains might not have been the right choice after all.
While it has been made very clear that RDJ will be playing the role of Victor von Doom, fans are convinced that he might just be an evil variant of Tony Stark. This will not only destroy the character, but also not afford him the respect that was given to the last big bad of the franchise: Thanos.
Fans want Doctor Doom to get the respect that the MCU afforded Thanos
Thanos was set up all the way back in Phase 1, when Loki brought a Chitauri army to invade Earth. Turns out that this army was on loan from Thanos, who was after the Infinity Stones and was using Loki as a means to an end.
Thanos was then built up across three phases, showing up in more than a few end credits scenes, before appearing as the protagonist ofAvengers: Infinity War. There is nowhere enough time to do the same with Doom, which is the reason the character might be relying so much on star power rather than a built narrative.
Doctor Doom’s arrival in the MCU happens at a time when it can’t possibly do justice to all that is necessary for Victor von Doom’s characterization. For starters, there doesn’t seem to be enough time for the character to get acquainted with the Fantastic Four. Doom serves as a villain for the Fantastic Four first, before graduating to become a wider threat to the Marvel Universe.

The cast ofThe Fantastic Four: First Stepsis evergrowing, with more and more A-list talent joining the crew. While fans are sure that the film will be featuring a slew of Fantastic Four villains, there is no sign ofRobert Downey Jr.‘s Doom being a part of the project. Doctor Doom is an integral Fantastic Four villain and has been part of the two previous versions of the IP’s live-action outings.

Doctor Doom in the MCU will start his cinematic expedition withAvengers: Doomsday, where the character will be the main antagonist for The Avengers rather than The Fantastic Four. This would be going against the grain for the character, something that has not been done before for the character. However, there is a possibility that RDJ will only serve as the multiversal Doom, while another Doom could be the one native to the Fantastic Four reality.
