This is the era of anime, but Yoshiyuki Tomino holds a different perspective. While the world of anime is steadily gaining popularity, the legendary anime creator, best known for building theGundamanime franchise, is wary of the future. He feels the current anime trends are disrupting the sphere’s essence. In a recent interview, Tomino opened up about a myriad of things relating to anime. However, his deep concern for the sphere and how Disney’s animated projects have seen a creative decline was the highlight of the discussion.

He started his career in 1963, as a scriptwriter for Mushi Productions, assisting the creation of Japan’s first-ever TV anime,Tetsuwan Atom. Therefore, given his age-old expertise in the genre, Tomino’s revelations on the future of anime are certainly worth considering.

The decline of Disney films is conspicuous, and the 82-year-old anime director has reasoned it as a consequence of present industry standards. Talking to Japanese outletTokyokeizai Online, Yoshiyuki Tomino offered a speculative insight on how the anime industry might face a decline in the next five or six years. Moreover, he noted that replacing hand-drawn animation with digitalized versions had deteriorated Disney’s production quality. He said,

“After switching from hand-drawn animation to digital, many of Disney’s works became disappointing, but that’s how they end up being reproduced.”

Continuing with his revelation on the changing times, and production standards, Tomino pointed out the elements that guide pure creativity. He drew a comparison of the building he was to that of Disney films. Tomino added,

“This magnificent building has been completely digitalized and has excellent air conditioning. It’s the same thing as the boring works produced by Disney’s digital production system today. A creative person must have a crazy side. Spiritual, earthy, and indie-like. If you can create an indigenous piece of art in a space with fully controlled air conditioning, I think you should do it.”

Tomino claimed that going to the tax office is easier now, as he is not ridiculed for his profession anymore.
