The kids on the show happened to be extremely brilliant actors who nailed their roles, like Haley Dunphy, the street-smart eldest daughter. In an interview withCosmopolitan, Hyland also echoed this sentiment and said she wanted Haley to,“own her badssery in the fashion world—becoming a badss stylist or brand mogul or anything like that.”

Hyland’s character somehow became a caricature of Claire, Haley’s mother. Similar to Mrs. Dunphy, she got pregnant at a young age, and even Dylan had a hint of Phil in him. It was almost like she fell into a generational trap, which the writers should have avoided.
Moreover, Haley and Dylan didn’t even move out of the Dunphy household until the very last episode. So indeed, it felt like a disappointed conclusion to her character because they could’ve at least portrayed the couple to be slightly more independent and capable.
