Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Announced Her Abdication

Denmark witnessed a dramatic month by the beginning of 2024, as Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication, after ruling for 52 years on January 14. Becoming the first Danish monarch to step down in nearly 900 years, Queen Margrethe II conducted the formal signing of the abdication on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace. Her decision to step down automatically made 55-year-old Frederik the new monarch of Denmark.
