Although the anime community is very divisive, the one thing that every anime fan can agree on is the fact thatDeath Noteis probably the deadliest weapon that has ever been introduced within any story. It is a device that can not only kill others just by writing their name, but it can also decide the time, date, year, and even the way they die.

Although the basis of the deadly weapon varies depending on the character employing it, in the instance of Light Yagami, it merely served to highlight his God complex. He believed himself to be the savior of the world who was destined to bring peace by killing all the evildoers, and while it worked initially, Light got wrapped up in the power and eventually was killed by it.
However, what manyDeath Notefans won’t know is that there was another tool that could have potentially saved Light’s life, but it never made it to the central narrative. This tool was a death eraser that was introduced in the pilot of the series, and if Light had this tool along with theDeath Note, he would have saved himself.

The death eraser inDeath Note’spilot chapter
Before the officialDeath Notestory was released for the fans, creators Tsugumi Ohbaand Takeshi Obata published a pilot one-shot manga chapter in the Weekly Shonen Jump, which was called The Taro Kagami Story. The plot featured Taro Kagami, a thirteen-year-old boy who gets his hands on aDeath Noteand explores the mysterious power.

The overall story of the pilot chapter is quite similar to the mainDeath Notestoryline. However, the only change is the death eraser that was given by Ryuk to Taro as he regrets killing his first two targets. The concept of a death eraser is quite simple, as it helps in erasing the names of the characters that have been entered in theDeath Note.
Although the death eraser can bring the dead characters back to life, it will only work if the characters are not cremated. Therefore, it offers a very significant time limit that makes the narrative even more intriguing. But bringing people back from death had a lot of complexities, which is why it was never introduced in the mainDeath Noteseries.

The death eraser could have saved Light Yagami’s life
It is understandable why theDeath Notecreators did not introduce the concept of the death eraser in the main storyline. However, if they had written it within the story, it would have helped Light Yagami in a major way. He could have used it in the best way possible and made sure that his tracks were always covered.
Although there is an argument to be made about the fact that it would have only boasted his God complex, the fact of the matter is that Light would have employed this death eraser in a way that could have saved his life. As fans already know, Light was incredibly intelligent, and he even outsmarted Ryuk a couple of times. Thus, Light could have easily made Ryuk kill him and then brought him back to life.

The only problem is that it would have extended theDeath Notenarrative and made it even more complex. Also, it would have changed the ending of the series, which, according to many, was exceptionally perfect. Therefore, the creators’s idea of removingthe death eraser from the central storyline worked out perfectly.
