Dave Filoni and George Lucas created a slew of characters forStar Wars: The Clone Wars, a lot of which were very well received by fans. Be it Ahsoka, or Captain Rex, there has been a lot of love for these characters that has been cultivated by the show over its many seasons.

However, while speaking with StarWars.com, Dave Filoni revealed that there was one character that he wished he could have handled a little better. While there are some characters that fans have come to associate with failed story arcs in the Star Wars canon, according to Filoni, he could have done better with Steela Gerrera.
Dave Filoni wishes that Steela Gerrera was not killed
Dave Filonirevealed that Steela Gerrera, like her brother Saw, was created by George Lucas. The character, as Filoni revealed, was set up to be a foil for Ahsoka.Regarding the character, Filoni said:
I will say this about Steela. When I think of her, I think that she’s one of the biggest regrets I have this season, which is I wish we hadn’t killed her. We all ended up liking that character very much. I thought she was very successful. Dawn-Lyen Gardner played her and played her brilliantly.

I just thought that there was an opportunity to bring a character like that back in the future because we liked her so much by the time we were ready to kill her. But in the writers’ room, we didn’t feel like we could tell that story and let everybody get off scot-free. It just couldn’t work out that neat and there had to be a price paid for their freedom, and it ended up being Steela for various reasons.
Dave Filoni has always been careful about the characters that he creates, and how they are treated in the media that he is casting them in. Be it Steela or Ahsoka, it is important for Filoni to keep the characters in interesting situations, such that they can be used later.

However, because the narrative would have felt weightless without it, one character had to be killed off, and that was Steela, even if Filoni did not want it.

Be it James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi film, Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film, the new trilogy that they have announced, or even the Lando film that was supposed to star Donald Glover, Star Wars has been announcing projects and then providing little to no updates on them. This has led to even the most hardcore fans having their excitement diluted.
