Dandadan, the supernatural action-comedy series by Yukinobu Tatsu, has become a fan favorite. Thanks to its eccentric storytelling with a mix of occult, romance, and dynamic characters, the series rose to the top of the current anime scene.

However, its first-ever popularity poll has introduced an interesting dynamic-Momo Ayase, the protagonist, has been overshadowed by Okarun, whose evolution, personality, and story have captivated readers. However, not many can say this was a shocker. While Momo is undoubtedly the narrative’s backbone, with her leading the group, Okarun’s relatable personality and interesting growth have made him the fan-favorite of the series.
Okarun’s transformation from a socially awkward, timid, weak individual into a confident and formidable fighter has resonated deeply with fans. Not to mention, a major chunk of the plot revolves around Okarun and his family jewels.

Okarun’s story and personality are a delight
Okarun’s journey is marked by a unique balance of comedy, romance, and a sense of immature sincerity. His personality and initial awkwardness lead to many heartfelt moments and give him an irresistible charm. He feels more realistic than the recent male leads in the anime scene.
His insecurities make him relatable, especially while he is going through puberty and dealing with his first love. His determination to protect those he loves shows the kind of growth that belongs to a main character in the likes of Ichigo and Naruto. Okarun feels like an inspired character who mirrors the closest your next-door, shy and good-natured teenager.

His eccentric personality and his interactions with the rest of the cast elevate every interaction, cementing his role as the core of the series, at least emotionally. Particularly, his interactions with Momo, with his budding feelings, add an additional layer of complexity to his character.

Momo plays a more consistent and stabilizing role in the series. Although her growth from a fiery and somewhat irritable personality to a clear-headed leader is evident, it is not enough to beat the multiple layers of growth Okarun.Missing family jewels, Turbo Granny getting used to and using it in combat, and even now when he has lost his powers, Okarun remains a very well-developed character.
The Protagonist is lovable, just not as much as Okarun
Momo’s strength, resilience, and no-nonsense attitude ground the chaos around her, making her the key to the progression of the story. However, she lacks the dramatic shifts or comedic highs that make Okarun stand out.
While her development is more subdued, she holds the narrative together, giving Okarun and others the space to grow.Momo’s deep emotionalconnection to Okarun is a highlight of the series.

The results of the firstDandadanpopularity poll reflect not just the fans’ love for Okarun but alsoDandadan’sability to create a rich and well-developed cast. Momo’s overshadowing is a reflection of how the series gives each cast member a chance to shine, unlike most other anime where protagonists have all the importance and focus.
Yoshihiro Togashi Might be the Only One to Crack the Code for Perfect Shonen Couples Before Dandadan Came into the Picture
AsDandadancontinues to evolve, the dynamic between Momo and Okarun will remain a cornerstone of its charm. Okarun might be taking on the attention now because of his stark growth and cool transformation, but Momo and Okarun are the core of the entire supernatural world ofDandadan.
