Cyberpunk 2077is a game filled with endless replayability elements. From a variation of romance options, different life paths, dialogue options, builds, and much more, there’s more than enough reason to revisit Night City countless times. So, with a game filled with so much replayability, why has it never received a New Game Plus mode?
For those who might be unaware, New Game Plus is a mode that is usually unlocked at the end of a campaign. It’s become increasingly popular, especially in RPGs, in recent years, and was even added to one ofCD Projekt Red’s other titles,The Witcher 3, just a few months after its launch. The mode varies from game to game, but often allows players to restart the game with all of their gear, loot, perks, and more still intact.

This is due to cross-platform technical constraints.
While Cyberpunk 2077 had somewhat of a disastrous launch back in 2020, the RPG has come on leaps and bounds since. Here at DualShockers, we even ranked Cyberpunk 2077among one of the best RPGs of all time. But some players think the game can be madeeven better with the addition of New Game Plus.
Unfortunately, lead quest designer Pawel Sasko believes it would “completely break the way the game is constructed.”

Cyberpunk 2077 Doesn’t Have A New Game Plus Mode For A Reason
We recently sat down with Cyberpunk 2077’s lead quest designer, Pawel Sasko, for anexclusive interviewto talk all things Cyberpunk 2077. During our time with Sasko, we asked the developer and now associate game director to explain why the game never received a New Game Plus mode.
According to Sasko, it primarily came down to the game’s core design. “For us, it’s really important that when you have components in a game, they all work together and they all work well and they all make sense,” Sasko first explained. “The thing is, Cyberpunk is very specific when it comes to its construction.”

The developer then detailed how the game’s prologue is about “becoming a legend,” while the remainder of the game is about dealing with terminal illness. “It’s incredibly difficult to figure out a way where New Game Plus could be done in a way that doesn’t completely break the way the game is constructed,” Sasko told DualShockers.
“By design, it would require major changes to the construction of the game to really do it well.”

Sasko continued by saying that Cyberpunk 2077 “hasn’t really been thought through as a New Game Plus experience,” unlike games such as Starfield, which Sasko believes incorporates the mode “really well.”
“Cyberpunk wasn’t like this, so that, for me, is a major issue when it comes to the construction of the game.”

The lead quest designer would also go on to explain how Cyberpunk 2077 was “designed to be replayed,” which was another reason for the lack of New Game Plus. “It’s to be replayed. It’s to try different life paths, try different romances, try different builds,” Sasko said. “There’s so many things that you can at least, twice or three times, have a very varied experience in 2077. So this is another answer, the game was built to be replayed that way.”
He ended by saying that CD Projekt Red could “figure out the design solutions that would help out with everything connected to mechanics and gameplay,” as that is simply “math and design.” But it is the factor connected to what the game is on a narrative level and how important that is to the game as a whole, which is preventing the addition of New Game Plus.
Ultimately, Sasko says it “could look very tacked on” if done incorrectly.
