Lampmaster is one of the main bosses inClair Obscur: Expedition 33and is the first true challenge that will test your counter and dodging skills.

There are two phases to the Lampmaster boss fight, so it’s best to go in well-prepared. This means having the right skills to strengthen your party members and weaken the boss, as well as having the best party composition.

Prepare for the Lampmaster in Clair Obscur Expedition 33

How to Prepare for Lampmaster

Before we get into how to beat Lampmaster inClair Obscur: Expedition 33, it’s important to discuss how to prepare. In the following sections, we will discuss the best party composition and the best skills to equip before engaging the boss.

Best Party Composition

While Lampmaster can be defeated withany party composition, I recommend havingGustave, Lune, and Scielas your primary party. Keep Maelle in reserve.

Gustave’s uniqueOverchargeability will come in handy for this fight; Lune does a great job at applying Slow to the boss and dealing consecutive hits, and Sciel’s Dark attacks deal great damage to Lampmaster.

Lampmaster Attack Breakdown

Now that you’re prepared to take on Lampmaster in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, let’s break down the boss' moveset. There aretwo phases to this fight, and while each is fairly similar, Lampmaster has stronger attack moves in the second phase.

First Phase

During the first phase of the Lampmaster boss fight, there are a handful of attacks to look out for. It’s possible to know which attack is coming bylooking at the phrase that appears under the health barof the boss.

8 Best JRPGs With Time Travel

Time travel is a finicky theme to get right, but when a JRPG nails it, the results are marvelous.

In the grid below, you may find the attack moves done by Lampmaster, a quick description of each, and whether it’s best to dodge or parry the attack move.

Attack Phrase Indicator

Attack Description

“Lampmaster uses the power of its lamps to attack.”

The lamps turn purple, and they shoot one purple blast, hitting all party members.

“Lampmaster switches off all the lights in the cave and attacks.”

Each lamp shoots off a beam of light toward different party members, totaling 4 beams.

“Lampmaster performs a jump attack.”

Lampmaster lunges into the air and slams down on one party member.

“Lampmaster triggers a dark explosion.”

Lampmaster draws a purple line with their fist and then jumps up and slams their fist down on one party member.

Second Phase

The second phase of the Lampmaster boss fight is more challenging as eachattack deals more damage and is harder to readwhen it comes to dodging and countering.

Take a look at the grid below to learn the attack pattern of the second phase.

“Lampmaster throws a vast ball of light at the expedition.”

Lampmaster draws a white orb underneath them and shoots it at the whole party. A yellow jump indicator appears.

Jump and then R2/RT to counter.

“Lampmaster performs a strange ritual with its lamps.”

All lamps will glow red for an instant, indicating they are powering up.

Shoot the lamps in the same order they light up to remove their power.

“Lampmaster attacks with a massive sword of light.”

Lampmaster grabs a sword from behind them and swings it across, hitting the entire party.

Dodge is the safest bet.

“Lampmaster performs a flying combo.”

Lampmaster targets one party member and swings their arms four times. Between each swing is a delay. On the last swing, Lampmaster will fly backwards and lunge forward for a final attack.

Dodge the first three attacks and parry the last one.

How to Beat Lampmaster in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

As you can see from the previous section in this guide,it’s best to countermost of Lampmaster’s attacks, with the occasional jump and dodge on certain attacks mentioned.

To start off the fight, it’s best tofocus on filling up each party member’s AP gauge to the max. This can be done by executing standard attacks, instead of using skills.

I don’t recommend shooting Lampmasterat all during this fight, since that wastes AP and gun shots don’t do much damage against this boss, except when aiming for the lamps ritual.

These games are the closest to social interaction a JRPG fan will ever get.

Once each party member has their AP gauge filled, it’s time to utilize their best skills. Remember, Gustave is primarily on the battlefield due to hisOverchargeability, so take some time to fill that up until it reaches 10 (max).

Don’t useOverchargebefore it reaches 10. In the meantime, utilize hisLumiere Assaultattack andPowerfulbuff skill to help fill theOverchargebar quicker.

Remember, critical hits onLumiere Assaultgrant Gustave one additional charge, andPowerfulhas the possibility of granting additional charges.

You can fill Gustave’sOverchargemeter by dealing damage, dodging and parrying.

As for Sciel, focus on using herSearing Bondability for medium Dark Damage. While Lampmaster isn’t weak to Dark attacks, they still do a ton of damage and are still the strongest elemental attacks to use.

Additionally, Sciel’sFortune’s Furyskill can be used on Gustave and Lune, causing them toinflict double damageon the next turn.I recommend casting it on Gustave, right before he uses theOverchargeability.

10 Best JRPGs With Fun Traversal Mechanics

Plenty of JRPGs give you more ways to explore the world than just your own two feet.

Lastly, Lune can be used toSlow Lampmaster through herIce Lanceability, which causes the boss to have fewer turns.

This also results in creating anIce and Light Stains, which increases the damage of her Wildfire skill. Then, Wildfire creates a Fire Stain, which increases damage of herThunderfallability.

In other words,Lune’s attack patterns should be the following:

Rewards for Defeating Lampmaster

After defating Lampmaster ,you get one Picto, more weapon upgrade materials, and aShape of Lifeto upgrade your Revive Tint.

Following these guidelines for each party member will have you defeating the first and second phase of the Lampmaster boss fight. Remember to heal when necessary.
