8 JRPGs Better Than They Have Any Right To Be
Never judge a book by its cover or a JRPG by its excessively anime protagonist.
While finding them doesn’t add anything gameplay-wise, it’s great for players who want to dive deeper into the RPG’s story and connect with humanity’s struggles.

In this guide, I’ll point out where to find all the Expedition Journals inClair Obscur: Expedition 33for those of you who want to learn about the hardships of those who gambled on a better tomorrow.
I’ll list the Journals in the order I found them in-game. If you’d like, you may use this guide as a walkthrough from the start of your playthrough.

One of the Journals is missable. To guarantee you’ll grab it during your first playthrough, trade Tokens for the Old Key during thePrologue’s Festival.
Journal - Expedition 81
Spring Meadows
The first Journal we get. Automatically acquired as you progress through the main story.
Journal - Expedition 68
Flying Waters
This Journal is hard to miss, because it’s on a mandatory path in Flying Waters to advance the story.
Journal - Expedition 53
The Small Bourgeon
You can access The Small Bourgeon from the World Map right after leaving Flying Watersand before heading to the Ancient Sanctuary. It’s to the west. Use theoverworld compass to guideyourself.
Inside the area, you’ll see a mini Bourgeon who requests Bourgeon skin to grow. Follow the path behind him, and you’ll quickly find Journal 53.
Journal - Expedition 63
Ancient Sanctuary
From the Giant Bell Alley rest point in the Ancient Sanctuary, head toward the blue lamps.
When you reach the open field, take the path with red trees above. The Expedition 53 Journal is there.
Journal - Expedition 52
Gestral Village
Go left from the Chief House until you reach what seems like an infirmarywith a giant white Gestral lying down. To the right, there’s an Arena sign on a cliff.
There’s an entrance to the left of that sign. Go inside to find the hilarious Journal 52.
Journal - Expedition 66
Esquie’s Nest
After the hilarious interaction between Esquie and François, the giant winged creature flies off but stumbles on a pillar, knocking it down.
Conveniently, that pillar opens up a new path accessible via grappling.Once on the new route, you’ll reach a split with one path north and one to the right. Go right to find Journal 66.
Journal - Expedition 62
After freeing Esquie, you’re able to ride him and destroy bluish rocks in the overworld and access new areas. Your next main objective will be to reach the Stone Wave Cliffs.
But before heading there, you’re able to keep going west to find more bluish rocks. Behind one of them, you’ll find the Journal from Expedition 62.
Journal - Expedition 38
Yellow Harvest
With Esquie, you can reach Yellow Harvest in the overworld, an optional area. If it seems like there’s nowhere to go at first, look for wall holders to climb up.
Eventually, you’ll reach an Expedition Flag called Harvester’s Hollow. Keep moving forward until you get to a vast open field.
10 Best 16-Bit JRPGs
It was during the 16-bit generation that the JRPG word began to spread across the world.
Your destination is on the right side of this field.Go down the rocks and head straight, fighting or avoiding the Nevron along the way. Near that Nevron, there’s a slope. Climb it, clear an obstacle, and find Journal 38 at the top.
Journal - Expedition 44
Follow the same directions as in the previous Journal, but instead of climbing the slope, keep going straight. You’ll eventually find a blue lamp on the ground and the Journal beside it.
Journal - Expedition 59
Keep exploring Yellow Harvest, and you’ll eventually reach a grappling section. As you climb, you’ll find a rest point called Yellow Spire Wrecks.
From the flag, head to your left to access an open area filled with dead expeditioners. The Journal about the Nevron-eaters will be waiting there for you.
